Do snow flaps truely help cool your motor?

Yes, they help catch snow to be thrown back up in your tunnel to your coolers. If you ride in absolutely nothing but bottomless powder, you could get by without one, but why risk overheating while on a trail in/out or set up snow later in the year.
 
i like not having one in the deep, is a lot easier to get to your bumper when trenched in without that stupid flap being in your way!!! but in more setup conditions it is a must have.
 
I ran a 02 mt cat for 8 years without a flap. Only time I had over heat issues were on packed trail in high 30's for temp. I even removed the rear tunnel heat exchanger. If I would of had ice scratchers I would have been fine in those conditions. Most of cooling is done by the heat ex-changer in front of the drivers.
 
some sleds are under-coolered from the factory and need one for sure, while others come with coolers for days and can run low snow trails in the spring with no flap and not overheat... depends on the sled.

i like a shorty flap, helps with cooling but doesnt suck so bad in the deep or get sucked into the track when going into reverse.. that is ANNOYING!
 
The volume of coolant in the system makes a big difference. On my old mod sled, I had running board coolers, bulkhead cooler and a HUGE VanAmburg doublepass cooler at the back. Lots of surface area and LOTS of coolant. That's an advantage.
It's like the human body that is dehydrated will make him more susceptible to external temperatures. Well-hydrated people change temps less easily. Not as much fluxuation of body temps. Liquid fluxuates temps less easily than air. Simple science and the laws of thermal dynamics.

Just like the lake water in the summer. The temps just take longer to rise or cool than the air.

Also depends on the track too. Some tracks flip more snow up into the coolers and flap....and others don't. I had a 2.25" finger track for a long time and it threw a roost that was despised by all my buddies. I ran a long flap too...but I rarely needed the flap except for days when we had long stretches of gravel to cross (like a mile or more). But then I just packed the footwells with snow and let it go to work (I had running board edge coolers).

The newer sleds depend on the flap and its length and shape for cooling much more then the older sleds. Lots of factors at play here.
 
Think snowflaps on moutain sleds are over rated. Didn't run one on my 910 powered Vertical Escape and don't run one on my 12 Pro. I always run my scratchers on trails and when comparied to a Pro with a flap my sled is almost the same temp. And as far as getting pelted from a sled with out a flap to bad if you don't like it back off you're no Tucker HIbbert racing snowcross.
 
Running my M8 down the trail without the scratchers the temp would flash on the display with or without the flap. My flap got torn off in the middle of last year and I didn't bother to replace it cause I don't see a difference other than it's easier to get unstuck now. Also my sled doesn't throw as bad of a roost with out a flap as some others that I ride with who still have a flap.
