Do I need to pull the motor!?!?!?!

Do you have to pull the whole motor to install a new recoil rope!?!??! Really!?!?

Its a rental.

I really like mine.

Joe

No. I did it last year with the motor in the sled.

I had to "customize" a couple of hex head sockets to make it all work, but it can be done.

had to dig my recoil out earlier this year...

pull out the two mag side motor mount bolts the prop it up with a crow bar... then its easier to remove the recoil housing.

I thought about that last year but was worried about mangling the PTO side from the pressure, I did it in the stock position-- it was a pita and I did need to modify some hex head sockets.

Modify? do tell more Murph. What did you have to do to the sockets? Grind down for more clearance?

Had to shorten the hex head portion protruding from the socket-- made it just short enough that it would bottom in the bolt head and not extend any further. This allowed the hex head socket and ratchet to get on the bolt and clear the belly pan so that I could turn the bolt without interference from the non removable plastic.

Right on, I'll store that info away for future use ;)
Fingers crossed for tahoe snow soon over there in 18days ;)
Whats LTS like ?

07 road is thin-- asphalt showing through.

Untouched snow, on north facing slopes up high is surprisingly good, and sun baked or ridden on snow is destroyed and not worth riding....

Cheers for the update, Will probably look around the back of Northstar in the shaded areas. Always good riding in there.

I heated and then bent an Allen wrench to fit. It was a pain, but the most I had to remove was the can and the bracket thing the can sits on. I also did like mentioned above and shortened an Allen to fit in a socket to get in there, but once the bolt backed out a little, I ran out of room then ended up just bending one. The bent one seemed to work best, just took more time. But Hey, at least I didn't have to pull the motor, I thought for sure I'd have to when I looked at it on the mountian.

Whats get me on this whole thing is why are these ropes braking!! Surly they can come up with a stronger solution. The aftermarket ones are so much better.

Mine broke because the little plastic sleeve that screws into the recoil housing where the rope enters vibrated loose and my rope was rubbing on the threads. I have also heard of a few other Pro's, and some other polaris sleds that have done the same thing. So I put a dab of silicone on it when I fixed it in hopes that it will help it from vibrating loose. I've heard of people putting loc-tite on it as well, but I was out of loc-tite and didn't want to make a run up town to get more so I just used some silicone.

Yep! Same happened to mine!

After 100 miles I checked it again on Saturday and it had backed out again!

Maybe some Teflon tape?

^^same here

Dont use loctite on plastic-- it will eat the plastic, or make it fail later.

this just happened to me...was holding the cord and tying a knot in it so this wouldnt happen and my :censored::censored::censored::censored::censored::censored: dog came out the door barreling into me after a ball and there it went into the recoil FML

I should be able to get the cover off with some custom tooling/linkage my question is whats after that? lol
I've never dealt with a recoil before im very mechanically inclined but for whatever reason just never had to deal with recoils..(first sled i've needed to)

Im gonna have to re-coil this thing some i imagine? how much? any pointers or things to not screw up once i pop that cover off?
for all i know it could be simple just figured id ask

Thanks

just grsb the wheel inside and hold with one hand while you spin the housing with the other(look at how the rope enters the housing and spin it the same direction as the rope would pull it..once it stops turning, back it up till the hole in the wheel ligns up with the hole in the housing, push a screwdriver thru the slots in the housing to hold the wheel from moving, then feed a new rope thru both the wheel and the housing, tie off in the wheel, then tie a removable not mid- length of the rope(has to be untieable after everything is put back togeather)..then reinstall , feed rope thru console and tie on handle, then remove the knot holding the rope out..

Tie a knot several inches down from the handle. My handle has come off before ( not on my Pro but other sleds) and then you are pulling the recoil to put it back on. If it comes out of the handle the second knot will stop it from going into the recoil.
Then you can just oull it back out and out the handle back on.

thanks for the help guys really appreciate it :)
what a pain in the arse! now after 2 hours of 1/8" turns on those two lower bolts i have one last question;

anyone with experience leaving those two bottom bolts out? the pita ones?
i think im going to leave the bottom one out (the bottom left if looking at it) either way but i'm thinkin both might be too much...... but any experience on this anyone? i could save soo much time with both out lol

EDIT..leaving just the bottom right one out when looking at it...make life easier if ti ever happens again or for the next guy
