do I need to leave the heat shield on the stock pipe?

Hey guys,
So in putting back on the stock pipe because of smashing my SLP pipe, do I need to leave the heat shield on the pipe, what does it really do, to hold heat in the pipe or keep heat out of the hood area, or noise reduction? would like to just take it off. is there a down side to that?

toss the stock heat wrap and shield and have the stock pipe ceramic coated. It will look great. Plan B is to use the aluminum finish duplicolor hitemp ceramic paint and to a home job and an annual touch up. Over time the stock wrap and shield collects moisture and will rust the pipe.
