Difference between 2005-900 vs 2006-700

I have a 2005 RMK 900, have had some (maybe most) of the normal troubles that they are well known for, but love it when it is running. I have run into a 2006 700 for sale locally for a decent price. Looking at it I am curious what are the differences? I understand a smaller motor, but what of all the rest? Is it just the same machine with less power? I can not find specs on weight, but looking at the parts list the parts seem interchangeable so ids it the same weight and body???

I don't think the 2006 700 gets the bad rap that the 900 did, so what am I missing?

Thanks...

The 2006 700 is the exact same machine as the 2006 900 except for a smaller top end and the ecu mapping. Generally speaking the 700 is considered more reliable than the 900 just from the fact that since it produces a little less power, there is a little less stress on the moving parts, and I would bet they didn't sell as many of them.

You can take a look through the 900 forum and check out the common things you will want to address if you decide to pursue it. However, since you currently have an 05 900 then you probably are already familiar with the machine and what needs to be done.... there were a few updates in 06, but they are essentially the same sled. I can't comment on power as I haven't ridden an 06 700.

If memory serves me right the 700 is around 755 cc and the 900 is around 860-870 cc ... want to say 866?

Yep pretty much the same sled but engine more reliable because of less torque.

You are better going to an IQ chassis and loose at least 50 pounds of weight and better geometry for off trail.

I picked up a 2010 RMK 600 155 with a SLP 727 kit 2400 miles on engine ... less than a 1000 miles on chassis and engine rebuild for 4 grand.

I don't know what you are getting the 2006 sled for but the newer chassis handles better ... BUT I would stay away from ther 800 cc engine unless it's been upgraded so it doesnt gernade itself.

That is pretty much what I thought, Its the same sled with less motor... I guess I always thought there must be more to it that made it more reliable.

I thought the 2005-2006 were IQ Chassis??? I'm not sure what you are saying would get less weight and better geometry?

Wow, That's not happening in Alaska :)

But you can get 900s pretty "cheap", and the 700s sell like hotcakes, that said I may just start a business turning 900s into 700s :)

It is the same bottom end.

Now there are big differences between between the 05 and 06 especially in the chaincase and doubling of fuel injectors Which makes the two years NOT FULLY interchangable.

I suggest you take a look on ksl.com to see the deals.

Look at the weight specs on the 05 and 06 and they shaved off quite allot pounds from 2007 and 2010.

Also narrowed the front suspension which sucked for trails but is awesome for sidehilling. You can get aftermarket at 38-39 inches.

The weight and suspension plus how the weight is distributed changed the geometry.

900's need some TLC BUT when set up right will outclimb or at least keep up with most stock up to the pro especially with the 166 track. For me sidehilling is not very good (since I had to have surgery for ripping muscles out my right arm)

The 05/06 are the original IQ chassis, I believe Don is referring to the IQ RAW, they are indeed about 50 lbs lighter depending on what you have done to a 900. My 09 700 IQ RAW is about 40 lbs lighter than my 05 900 166, which is about 35 lbs lighter than stock. Don is also correct that in 06 it was a 755cc 700 or a 866cc 900.

The 900s have the torque, the newer (07+) small block CFI's have the snap.

06 700

I have two there was only one update for them and it was the fuel filter. I sold one to a friend and still have the other they were owned by an older couple and have 1200 miles on them . I bought the updated spindles, can and radiatior delete i'm on the line with mine i put it up for sale but after riding it two hundred miles in 11 i might keep it. Checked her out this month and its turn key might take it to swap meet might not.

I maybe comparing apples to oranges but, I had a 2005 900 fusion and everything about that sled was bad, including the motor. I also had a 1999 XC700 that had 17,000 miles on it when I sold it. I NEVER touched the motor.
118 pounds of compression on one cylinder and 120 pounds of compression on the other when I sold it. $.02

The 900 motor mounts and misalignment topped with poor durometer on the rubber and not to mention a inept balance on the primary clutch caused failures in many areas on the sled

Funny, I have had virtually no problems with my 900 in the 3 years I have owned it... it was all stock except for 06 motor upgrades (crank/pistons, etc) when I bought it... I just did the BASIC stuff that folks recommended and couldn't be happier. The couple minor problems I have experienced could EASILY happen to any sled on the snow.

Ive got an 06-700, runs pretty good... keeps up with my friends 800 dragon. Ive done the venting, working on the clutch (newbie), but other than that, its been great.
