diesel

My wife and I both drive diesel pick ups. She drives a Ford:( and I'm in a Dodge:D. The local pump (safeway) switched to a bio mix. Right away we started to see problems. Her filter gummed up bad. My truck only has 34,000 miles and the fuel system now has severe leaks. I was told it is due to the different sulfur content in the bio... Who knows. I just know that I have a new truck that I can't park on the concrete drive because every morning I have a 3" stain where the diesel leaks. The good news is that the warranty doesn't cover it!

damn..... That sucks ***.

On the duramax you can bend the a/c line out of the way a little bit so that the fuel filter it slide up and out the top. Put the filter on hand tight and you can take it off with your hands. Never had a problem with leaking. I bought a special wrench off of ebay to remove the WIF sensor out of the bottom of the filter. I always keep a bucket of rags behind the rear seat to clean my hands if I am working on some thing.
Truck starts acting up or fuel mileage drops change the filter. easily under a 15 min job if done the way I listed and you have done it a few times.

With the cold weather that is a great idea to keep a extra on hand:D otherwise stay close to me!:):)

What do you guys use to clean the black crud out of your fuel tanks? I thought the biodiesel was supposed to keep the crud out. I have 85,000 on this '02 Duramax

Can use stuff called Prist, get it at any aviation supply distributor.
We don't have a choice here in MN, all diesel has at least 2% bio, lots of problems last winter being the first year of the knee jerk legislation, school busses stalling, public transit problems, etc.

In an attempt to be proactive in my FASS equipped Cummins, I tapped coolant line off of my heater, wrapped it around the fuel line all the way back to the tank, wrapped in pipe insulation, and plumbed it into my FASS pump heater ports. Have it valved so I can turn it on and off as needed. As long as I can get the truck started and running long enough to begin to warm up, it will heat my fuel and keep my filter clear. Always have the spare filter with as well. No problems so far.

Last, fuel pressure gauges are worth their weight in gold for diesel trucks. Great early indicator of impending doom.

Worked with NDSU in Fargo about 5 years ago. They had Gov. grant to do testing of Bio Diesel. We installed on 5 Caterpillar machines owned by the city to test amount of blend and it's issues. Trust me if you want to sit along the road and also make your favorite mechanic some good money run Bio. The Gov. wanted us to file a false report to make it look like this was good thing!! We declined to comment at all. You make the decision on what our findings were as I can't give them out!! I know alot of farmers don't like to here anything neg. nor do I as I have a vested interest in farming, but the technology is not here yet. I think it will in time...just don't know when. MTNRCR

PS That pic. is prime example of a filter with Bio in it. Also the black is the waste given off from bacteria living in fuel. The bacteria lives on water in fuel. You will need to treat with anti-bacteria chemical to take care of problem.

How long did you run standard fuel before switching to B-20? How long have you been running B-20? Bio fuel has a cleansing effect that cleans up alot of the contaminates that can hang out in a tank with normal fuel.

I have used stuff called HOWES before. Has worked good for me. Alot better than Poweservice!! Had that stuff freeze in the filler tube when i was pouring it in. was about -40 that week though!!

The "black stuff" is more than likely the bio eating the liner of your plastic tank, and the "snot" looks like water/algie that tends to grow when useing Bio, Thats what we've seen in the strokers, and cummins. Just my opinion.

That was my first thought too, and it can cost alot of $$$ to get algie out of the system for good.

Sounds like the filter is a bigger problem on the duramax than the cummins which makes sense because the duramax doesn't have a lift pump, it draws the fuel from the tank with the injection pump.

I wonder if the duramax guys can add a lift pump, perhaps like a glacier diesel inline pump that many of us dodge guys are running. It's basically a walbro pump that has a bleed off valve and a line return between it and the injection pump. After installing this pump in my truck I see 20 psi at the injection pump I don't care how clogged up my fuel filter is. I still change my fuel filter every year just to keep my pump from working to hard, but drivability does seem better after installing it.

Thankfully we don't have biocrap up here in AK, when it shows up it had better be cheaper or I'll be selling my truck and go back to gas.

We use Hot Stuff on all our equipment on the farm untill we know everything has at least 75% #1 dieselin the tank. its $20/gal and one oz treats 4 gal so it lasts a long time and its good to -40

Sorry to here all your troubles, Last winter there was out of spec fuel being sold. Am sitting on my 7th biodiesel plant startup right now. New 60million gallon plant running Canola and Soybean oil. All these plants can run canola, soy or animal fat. Industry is just getting to the point of having quality standards, the plants i have been working for ship ALLOT of there bio to Europe, and they dont seem to have the problems we do , they have been using it much longer then the US. 2% blend should not give people problems in the winter (thats if it was in spec to start with). Distribution and quality hopefully is watched much closer this year.
