I just bought my first diesel, an 02 Powerstroke. Wondering what additives people are using, and any reasoning behind it?...thx!

FPS (fuel performance solutions) Is by far the best stuff, made special for the ULSD these days, just google fps or fuel performance solutions for info, works great for us :beer;

diesel additives

Okay, I might be biased being a John Deere parts guy, but Deere has an excellent line of additives for diesels. All are formulated to keep injectors clean, provide lubricity for fuel systems, increases cetane for faster starts and more power, and is compatable with the new ultra-low sulpher fuels now on the market. It is available in both summer formula and a winter formula that includes an anti-gell additive for cold weather. Deere also has winter and summer versions specifically formulated to work with biodiesel blends.

Deere was specing Standadyne for their engines when I started with them about 12 years ago, but quickly switched to the formulas they have now when the Standadyne product was found to not meet their specifications. The Deere formulas also contain additives that fight an organic microbe (bacteria) that lives in diesel fuel that others don't have.

Let me know if you want more info.

That's some funny chit right there!! No additive will take ultra low sulfur #2 diesel to -50F. There is no need to use lubricity additive if you buy at a place that sells premium diesel.

While you might not need it, it is cheap insurance. Protects you from the occasional dry load. They are mixed by hand, humans do make mistakes.

For me I will play it safe.

Use Power Service Diesel Fuel Supplement + Cetane Boost. Here's A linky to the product:

You can get it at Wal-Mart, but here are some other places:

I've always used it and I know it's good to -50 deg. Plus it cleans, lubricates, and boosts cetane (diesel octane).:beer;

thats all i use, PS diesel fuel supp. it says one bottle treats 100 gallons but after runnin a few tanks w/out it i put a bottle to the tank. just keeps every thing in working order.

stanadyne, power service, howes, they all work the same, just use something.

Totally agreed!!!! I myself use AMSOIL diesel concretation for lubrication purpose in every tank fill which is a MUST to assure longevity on fuel injector pump and injectors due to lack of lubrication found in ULSD (Ultra low sulfur diesel). Almost every gas stations are now carrying ULSD...

I've used Howes, pickup sat overnight in temps about -5 degrees F and was gelled up the next morning. :mad: If it got down to -20 it probably wouldn't have even started. I had the heater plugged in too. I don't understand why it doesn't work for me and lots of other people say they have no problems. Are you all mixing it according to the directions or stronger? At least when I put #1 fuel in it I know the truck will start the next morning and won't bog going down the highway at 65 MPH. :rolleyes:
