Diamond Drive whine noise?

09 M8. After running hard down the trail(high speeds for a short period of time), it started to make a high pitch whine noise from the DD/clutch area. It would go away after I got off into the trees for awhile. I know its not a trail sled, and you shouldn't run it like a trail racer, but was not running it that hard.

I am thinking the noise is coming from the DD, the noise would not follow the RPM of the motor, so it shouldn't be from the primary.

I stopped and felt the clutch sheaves and they didn't seem hot.

????

I did put in the BDX wide bearing, stock bearing looked good when I replaced it. I do have side vents on it, so you tend to hear alot more noise from the clutch/DD area.

Very common. Had this on my M6 and my M7, I think I have some whine on my 10 M8 as well. It really depends on how the gears are cut, similar to whine you would hear with certain aftermarket ring and pinions on a car/truck.

just like gear driven cams on cars, you here the whine from the gear to gear harmonics. ski

D D whine

your whine in your D D is not normal the gear cluster is making more noise then it should.arcticat has had problems with there gears breaking welds & metal filings going thought the gears. Not a good thing. Dump your oil & take a close look at it. My 07 has had some problem with the DD.ANY metal in the oil is BAD

Hmmm....every diamond drive cat I've owned has had a whine to it and so have all the other cats with Diamond Drives that we ride with. If the whine goes away in my sled "I WILL WORRY"!

Mine would whine after high speeds on the trails. And continue to whine till after slowing down for awhile in the trees/meadows...........

if it only whined on the trails at high speeds and went away when i slowed down, I would not of worried, but it will stay making noise for about 10 mins after I got off the trails.

might pull the DD AGAIN and see if anything looks out of place

I have a can on it

So you're set then!!

Whenever I get on a DD sled for the first time each year the whine freaks me out till I ride another one & remember that it's normal.
You'll notice it the most on trail, and after you let off the gas from high speed.

Now, if you hear a grinding noise... be a bit more concerned.

I pulled the DD out and completely apart today. Everything looks good, except for the Arctic Cat oil I put in about 200 miles ago. The oil is dark and "burned"/****ty looking. I am going to try the BDX oil and see if that looks any better after a couple hundred miles.

I am purty sure those are the same product.

This may be different than what you are hearing, but my '07 & '09 both have what I would describe as a squealing noise and it varies from ride to ride. It really bugged me when I bought my '09. It would squeal when I had the track up in the air rotating it. I decided it might be the seal that rotates with the trackshaft at the DD hub. I squirted some WD-40 under the seal and ran it and it changed the sound a lot. So when I took out the drive to replace the notorious bearing I coated the DD hub and inside of seal with chassis grease upon reinstalling the drive, etc. That eliminated the squeal for about 40 miles or so, but then the squeal returned, but not nearly as loud. I noticed a smooth ring on the hub of DD when I was putting the grease on. I can still hear the squeal on both sleds and it still bugs me a little mainly because I know what's doing it ,but haven't come up with cure other than removing the seal which really isn't a solution for obvious reasons. Probably live with it for now unless I get really motivated. I'm not suggesting that the DD doesn't whine, it may be a high frequency sound which I'm dead to or I'm just not focusing on it. Just thought I'd throw this out there, as this has been my experience. Even if I was to eliminate this there's plenty of other noises to zero in on. It definitely isn't my belt squealing.

Fill it with 75/90 amsoil gear lube and it will quite down a bit and last longer. Add a few extra ounces so the planitary actually touches the oil. Years ago Harley Davidson sold an additive for the trans on the bikes to quite their whine, it made a big difference. Ford also sold an additive for their early 2000 trucks to quite the rear end.
