Diamon Drive

Diamond Drive

Anybody have a diamond drive for sale I don't think mine is going to work anymore. 1400 miles with oil changes every 500 miles and this is what happens.

1400 miles, you did better than me, I blew mine at 360 miles then again at 800, now I'm runnibg BDX gears and no problems so far, I think the odometer is sitting at about 1450 now, you should give BDX a call it's not that expensive to rebuild as long as the case and the planetary ring gear are still intacked. Good luck.

Let me guess, you have the mechanical reverse model. Seems like there is a serious flaw with that system because the '05's don't have near as many problems. I took my '05 apart this fall and it looked like new.

Looks just like the one in my 06 except that wrecked both sides of the case too! I don't think there was one good part left in it. I would call BDX and just buy one from them. Not only will it last...it will be alot lighter. Just my .02!

I have 6700 km's on my 07 m8 162 and never had a bit of trouble with it. Also now about 1000 km on my new 09 m8 162 with a boostwurx turbo kit and same thing no issues.

It was a 05 diamond drive. It is pretty much all junk. I was going to check BDX and call around see if I can find a used one. Cat wants 823.95 for a complete Diamond drive.

I wonder what is actualy causing the failure on these? I have almost a 1000 miles on mine without a oil change. Before anybody sais it I know it needs to be changed I'm getting ready to do it. I check the oil level about every 300 miles and the color and smell also I use a paper towl to get a idea. My oil is always clean/new looking and does not smell burnt. I may be in for a big surprise though when I pull it out to clean it though. I have a 07 M8

The pics above look like it run out of oil though, did you see any leakage any where? Maybe a bearing failed then the seal let go letting all the oil go bye bye?

I have 5500+ kms on my 06 and only 1 oil change. Never had the case apart yet and no problems whatsoever. The oil was a little dark when I changed it a couple months ago, but it looked pretty good. I guess diamond drives are like every other part ever put on a sled. Some work and some dont.

Whos having more failures guys who ride trail's or just ride at faster continous speeds vs guys on off the throttle-moutain riding varying speeds ?
This may not be a factor at all maybe its just a moisture problem pitting bearings then it all goes down hill from there? I have never had one apart yet but does the bolt going through the brake side and also the 2nddary clutch bolt set any bearing preloads in the DD?

planetary and seals are the weak links. if you service it every couple of rides you will know if you get a seal leak. not much you can do when the planetary starts to go, if you catch it during inspection you can replace it, if you see brass when you change the fluid it a sure sign the end is near. i got 4003 miles out of my first one. the bdx drive has no reverse...

I replaced my DD at 1200km after all the gears and bearings was gone.
Then a familiar litle noise/vibrations came at 2000km.Took the DD apart and had to change the bearing that holds the planet gears in place.
And have worked good now for 600km..."time will show"....
Next time it blows I will buy the BDX box.Or may be go for the Supreme box.If you can sence the extra vibrations in the left foot ,you are might able to fix it before its to late..

I was with him when it blew not sure what exactly happened. The RTV doesn't look like it leaked but hard to tell. I have 2700 miles on my 05 M7 and we've been servicing them the same way. It had the updated seals. It did start to make a noise before it failed but we couldn't figure out what it was. I wish Cat would have put a dip stick in back in 05.

I think the problem is the seal leaks on the dd case and water gets in there and screws it up, thats what happened to mine. They get moisture in there and then they sit all summer long and then the rust comes. Even if you change the oil at the end of the season you won't be able to get all the moisture out, unless you take it apart and clean it. I have a new dd and opted for the gasket kit so far so good:face-icon-small-hap

I've got an 08 version for sale... but i guess that doesn't help... sorry. The 05/06 ones seem to last forever though!?
