Denver Area Riding

Hey guys and girls, I wanted to ask everyone about riding in the Denver area/Winter park area. I have been riding a few years in NY, This will be my first experience in the mountains. My friend who I am going to visit has ridden sleds a little bit too. We have found a few places in Winter Park that rent sleds that we might do, we also found a place in Denver that rents sleds and a trailer. If we would rent the sleds out of Denver, are their places we could go and ride and not get in to avalanche danger, because I do not have any experience with avalanche training or gear, I was thinking of a place we could ride trails to some open meadows and play in there. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

We moved from NY a couple of years ago and we did our first rides in Albany WY. There is a lot less avy danger in that area but you still need to be REALLY careful off the trail, riding is a lot different out here. Much easier ride to Albany than trying to deal with the skiers on I70

Albany Lodge rents some nice equipment at decent prices and the trails in the area are really well marked with plenty of places to play off trail if we get some fresh snow. Snow on the trails would be awesome by NY standards

Thank you for the information. That's why I was asking because I have heard even slopes that you wouldn't think could slide do slide. I have been watching the site for a while and saw that this year the snow is not setting properly.

I can't wait to come out and visit, I am leaning toward going to a place with a guide so we have a little more confidence that they will give us the proper tools. I know an Avy class is best, but I will only be out for a few days.

diz have you ever been to that area prob not !!!! i have sleded their for years nothing to slide ask bcil what he call it nebraska thanks and have a good day

Silly for you to thumbs me down (three times) for giving advice, then running around giving every other post a thumbs down too..lol A creek draw with 10 foot high sides could turn bad in the wrong situation. Just trying to give some pertinent info to someone who may not have any familiarity with riding off trail.

Every year people who think they are riding in a "safe area" die from avalanches. These are people who stick to trails...ride in meadows...and on and on and on.

But if Kaleb says its ok...well then shoot...thats like god speaking ;)

....some peoples kids

If you believe that an avy could happen even on the Bonivile salt flats (with trees), then yes, by all means, stay away from Church Park.

Diz, seriously, you need to ride that place (er, no, you really don't, it blows), of all the places I've been over there there is NOTHING over 15% for more than 30 feet.

It is the ONLY place I've ever seen in CO that I would honestly say you don't need gear. (I'm still wearing my pack, cause I spent WAY TOO MUCH MONEY to not wear it & it could come in handy if I fell in a lake or something!!)

You guys giving him a neg should really look at a topo before you cut on someone, it's F'in FLAT.

oh btw diz.... lick my nutz, they're kinda salty right now, you'll like it:face-icon-small-ton.

I could drizzle some chocolate on them if that'd make you feel better!!:D

You've got to forgive playbaby, he's a righty that got stuck moving to Kansas... those two will make anyone bitter!!!!:p

Offer up some beers and a steak dinner and I bet you'll get a Snowest member from that area to show you around. :beer;:beer;

I really find it amusing that **** and *** get asterisked, yet we can read about Kaleb teabagging Tudizzle.

I've got to delay the avy-gear rant for a bit, but just had to share.

bwahahahaha...oh the irony of it all :D

The best place to ride in the WP area would be Corona Pass, just not much snow in the area. Don't go to Church Park, we need about 2 more feet for it to be worth while.

As far as rentals go, check out Five Star Power Rentals, they rent 2010 800cc Summits and Cats. www.fivestarpowerrentals.com or 970-531-4053.

I think you're missing the point here though Clint, we're trying to keep them AWAY from avy danger!!!:D (you could easily go to Corona & avoid it, but there have also been some MONSTERS up there this year)

btw, if you're looking for a rental, these guys have the best sleds around. They rent REAL sleds, not rental crap that you get from other places. (or real nice 500cc toys...)

If you're going to hit Corona stop in Downieville & rent beacons & packs from Empire sports & ask one of us to meet up with you & at LEAST get a general how to on avy rescue. (and cross your fingers)
