Deer Stand Question

Building a deer stand this week. Gonna be about 16-20 foot high depending on the posts.

It is going to be fully enclosed, windows, roof, heater, etc. This will be my main stand and also I want it for when my dad gets older. Also I want it to be big enough that I can comfortably take my kids hunting in it as they get older.

So what size do you guys think would work. I'm torn between 6x6 or 6x5. I know not a huge difference, I'm just trying to figure out what will work best. I'm going to use a propane sunflower type heater so i want room for that to be out of the way. Obviously I need to fit 2 chairs inside as well.

either will work fine... my son and I often hunt out of a 5x5 and it can be a little bit tight with the chairs, but its not bad at all... we also have room for a propane heater and space to put our gear when we get in...

Make sure you add side mirrors from a truck to the windows, shot off of them things for years and works great!

or you could build a simple ledge on each window to rest the gun on... easier and not as cobbled together with better flexibility on your shots...

My vote would be 6x6, the little extra cost it would add to get the extra 6 sf would be worth it IMO.

I was thinking the same thing, but does it involve private land? We just did whatever the hell we wanted on our private land, guess I didn't think about it.

Yeah, just put an ice shack on stilts

Don't forget to line your box blind with carpet. Otherwise you're trapped inside a big drum

Out west we just cut the top of a fir tree off and go to town. My friend built a cool one but no roof,little chilly but he has dropped 5 elk out of the bird house

X, just drive your truck out into the brush. roll down your windows and sit in your nice warm truck until something walks infront you, pull your gun out of your window and bang!, back up to it, load it, and go home.

No, we don't. I hunted in northeastern Minnesota for 8 years, we hunt in portable stands, home made platforms with steel ladders, and the occasional box stand. We sit out there in sub zero temps, and tough it out. Ok, I can't speak for all of us, but my party hunts that way.



Way off topic, a friend of mine smokes cigars while he sits and still shoots deer. This is contrary to my previous beliefs as far as smoke and deer. Anyone have any different experiences?
