Death in Blue Lakes California

We lost a rider on friday evening. He was riding in an area that has taken the life of another rider about 7 years ago. The slope in the Blue Lakes area in not a large slope. The issue is it slides into a canyon the funnels a moderate size slide into a violent torent of snow in the canyon. We had recieved a moderate amount of snow over the few previous days. the snowfall amounts for the year have been around 20 percent of average so there was not very much snow in the area. It was a canyon that had wind loaded over during the storm over an ice pack. On the recovery we had an avalanche team come in and work the remaining slopes before we entered. They kicked off another sizable slide. A lesson to all of us even with a small amount of snow the danger still exists. We were riding over areas of dirt going in. My prayers go o ut to the families of the victim. As soon as they do a public report of it i will put a link on here for it.

I just want to express to everyone a little insight I am starting to see after responding to numerous avalanche calls within this area with search and rescue and the local fire/ems. The people being cuaght in these slides are being beat up so bad on the way down that having a beacon is simply to ease finding the body. Yes the beacons help in many situations but please dont feel it is the save all. I have had friends with near misses and numerous friends that have lost thier lives. So just a little tid bit of what i am seeing as an emergency reponder. Please be carefull out there.

RIP Dan... He was an avid Snowmobiler and a joy to ride with. He will be missed in Hope Valley. Dan was a major contributor to this forum and a positive advocate for the snowmobiling community, this is truly a tragedy.

I will miss you Dan

Dan was a good friend. I have known him since he was 14 years old. He tought me how to snowmobile and was always there when I needed help.I will always hold on to the memories I had with Dan, including all the shasta lake trips with him and his family. I will miss him allot and I will never forget what a good friend he was.
