Cant seem to find a Yamaha dealer that works with a person. Case in point, bolt snaped off the drive axle, I remove the axle and take it to a dealer, on my way thru town, They cant help me because they need the WHOLE sled to warrenty the bolt???? I say B.S. and leave. I am willing to do all the work, remove the broke bolt and reinstall the new bolt...99.9% of all the work in my mind. I dont live down the street from any dealerships ... 80 miles to the nearest one , oneway. Looking for any dealership between Missoula , Spokane, Libby mt. Thanks Dino

The reason they do that is because there may be other things they need to check to complete the warranty/service bulletin. If the other things don't get checked and there is a failure in the future, they get nailed.

If the starter on your new Chevy goes bad, do you take the starter to the dealership and they hand you a new one, absolutely not. You wouldn't even consider it, you take the whole truck in.

The reason the dealership wants the sled is so he can charge Yamaha for a Bunch of work $$$$ in his pocket. Yamaha in turn has to jack up there prices on parts , sleds and so on to cover this type of crap! And your right about the starter, If this was an electrical problem you bet they would have the Whole sled. When the hot grips didnt work I didnt take them just the grips. Its not the cost of the bolt...its about customer service. If the dealership had explained it to me the way you did I would have been more understanding. And probaly just bought the parts.....Thanks for your view on this....Dino

You are a little off base in your assumptions.

If the dealership hands you a bolt and tries to file a warranty claim, it will be denied. They are required to install it as part of the warranty.

If the dealership only wanted the money they would hand you the bolt and charge Yamaha for the labor to put it in anyway. Typically there are some things that they are supposed to inspect or adjust or ?

The reality is WARRANTY WORK IS NOT PROFITABLE. The manufacturers set the hours so low on these jobs that you can't get it done in their timeframe so you end up eating the difference.

Most warranty requires that they keep the parts on hand for 90 days and the manufacturer can request the parts be sent to them at any time during that period for inspection. If they don't have the parts, they are charged back for the warranty cost.

Also, if they hand you a bolt and don't complete whatever else is involved in the warranty claim they can be caught later if you take it to another dealer for the same issue. Then they won't cover the parts because they already did once.

There is a lot more to it than people realize. I spent a bit of time in the business so I have some insight as to how it all works.

Hope this helps.

It's a bolt! ... Go to Ace hardware..

Better yet.. Put it back together without the bolt and it's free

I am assuming you are talking about the bolt in the chaincase.

Exactly! ALL OEM's do this (pay less than the job actually takes) so dealers and techs do not get greedy and start "Upselling warranty work"

We live in a sue happy world. If they give you the bolt, and you break your hand installing it, your attorney is going to say "why didn't you make the customer bring the sled in?"

I stand corrected!

Yes the world is sue happy:mad: I talked with the dealership I originally bought the sled from and he took the time to basically explain the same things as said above!!! $5 bucks worth of parts is not worth the hassle. No I wont be reinstalling the gear back on the axle without the correct bolt and washer:eek: It just amazes me at the age of 50 that I can still be so assuming and arrogate about some things. Dino

I agree I own a dealership and doing warranty is not at all profitable because of the unrealistic flat rates and percentage of shop rates that we are given. When we repair something under warranty and Yamaha doesnt cover it for some reason we are left holding the bag, even if its under the warranty period. We have to watch ourselves.

That's pretty funny right there.

Mr Fusion, isn't it great when you have sent the customer out the door with a repaired unit and the manufacturer decides they aren't responsible for the fix. It would probably amaze customers if they knew how often the dealership eats it on warranty work.

The primary job of a manufacturers warranty department is to say "NO." THen you have to argue and plead your case to get the repair done.

Yeah I hear ya WFO. Then try to explain to the customer that the part wasnt covered and if he could come in and help you with the cost after he has taken the unit for 2 months. I have learned to cover my but with claims, unfortunate but the reality.
