This is a pretty big Avy & quick rescue for how big it was:

Quote from BCA:
Frontier Films was nice enough to send us this footage of skier/rider Dan Treadway being rescued from a large avalanche in the Canadian Rockies. Dan has been a major player in the world of big mountain skiing and riding over the years, as well as a longtime BCA and Tracker supporter.

Crazy

Man that was a BIG avalanche, it looks like the whole bowl let loose. Glad to see a happy outcome.

that incident happened many years ago, before avy bags were commonly used by every punter out there thinking air bags make them invincible. im by no means calling Dan a punter.

You DO, on the other hand, seem to be calling the people who ARE smart enough to MINIMIZE risk in a risky sport punters though.

I've got a word for people who think that not using technology that increases chances of survival when taking risks in avalanche country is a good idea... but I won't bother.

I love the argument used by the ignorant to make themselves feel better about not being smart.... if I did the smart thing I'd AUTOMATICALLY go do something stupid because I then think I'm invincible.... great argument.

Btw, I'm invincible anyhow... I just wear the bag cause it looks cool!! :D:D:D

Hey backcountry how's it going? Looks like there is another douch in the avy section who thinks like a tool about safety gear. Reminds me of the douch we ran into about being worried about spending more on his friends safety than they had spent on his.

I think there is one punter here pal and it's not the people buying and using avalanche air bags, it's you. Are you attempting to make me feel bad for buying and using an ABS backpack even though I'm not as good a rider as the slednecks or some other people of that caliber? I feel better playing in the hills with my ABS bag on my back and if I wasn't wearing it there are certain places I would think twice about going but you have to weigh the risk vs snow conditions with or with out an ABS bag. I don't put my life in this equipment and assume that it is guaranteed to ensure my survival or my floatation in an avy but luck does favor the prepared.

Let me guess, the guy shouting punter doesn't even own an ABS bag do you.....

who said anything about shouting. i was mearly pointing out that there are alot of people that ride in the backcountry who buy an ABS bag but dont even own a shovel or probe, or have common sense. ive heard people say "i dont need to worry about avalanches, i bought an avy bag"

obviously owning a piece of equipment that increases your chance of survival is of great benefit. however, if the ABS wearing rider thinks highmarking a wind loaded convex roll is a good idea, then yeah, that guys a punter.

and no, i dont own an air bag, im not opposed to them though.

Do you really think that is the case with more than .1% of avy bag owners???

I'm sure this person you speak of does exist, stupid people are everywhere, but in general I see that the people who know what they are doing & treat avalanche awareness as a part of life are the ones that wear bags. I have yet to see anyone with a bag that was not the more aware type of rider.
It's just another tool to minimize risk.

I'm gonna ride aggressively one way or the other, calculating what my odds are as I ride, and I'll take every little bit of help that may save my arse the day when I get caught in one that I can't handle. I hope it never happens, but if it does I'll know I did everything I could to mitigate the risk that is always there.

No Need to be rough on each other guys, difference of opinion will always be around....I know Dan quite well and this was before AirBags were marketed to and available to us all in the way they are over the last season. Dan is a consummate professional and takes only calculated risks. He does now wear an air big...

Being in the mountains is always a risk, we can mitigate that risk by increasing our knowledge and using different forms of gear...this video shows how it can happen to and still does happen to the average rider, a professional skier/sledded and even mountain guides are not immune to Mother Nature...an awesome reminder to always THINK!!! Safe winter to all! Keep er pinned

Ummm, avy bags have been available to everybody for many, many years.....not just last season. I know SnowBigDeal.com has been selling them since 2004. For those with weak math skills....that is 6 YEARS AGO

I'm calm man, just pointing out that avy bags aren't necessarily a "new" item. When I see misinformed people, I like to correct them to make sure the correct info is out there so theres not much room for lame excuses when disaster strikes. Thats how noble I am! hahaha....now KMA! :):face-icon-small-hap

I completely understand your point, I have been working with ABS and they have actually been out since 1985 so yeah around for a long time, however they have not been on most peoples radar until the last few seasons...it always takes people a while to get on board with new technology and Dan is one of those guys progressing the sport in many ways and now also doing that with safety...it will always be a choice and I know lots of people who don't use a good radio system VHS which actually can be more along the lines of safety then a lot of gear...they have been out even long but how many people use them....use what is in your budget and most importantly use your head to gain knowledge of how to stay out of slides, happy winter to all!
