In Utah now you can only be executed by leathal injection. However, the supreme court ruled that it wasn't retro-active so anyone on death row before the law was passed still gets to choose. So Gardner chose firing squad.
I met one of the guys that was on the firing squad for Gary Gilmore. He said even though Gilmore was the biggest dirtbag it still affected him (the deputy) in a negative way.

I don't know why the "firing squad" needs to be a person standing behind the wall with the death sentancee in his/her sights. With today's technology, put the rifle in a good vice setup and get a remote trigger device. No one has to look through a scope while they do this - why should we give dirtbags the justice of impacting somone (emotionally) that has to look through a scope and pull a trigger?
That said... we keep too many of these losers around for WAY too long - I think we should step it up! Guys like Curtis Algier or whatever his ugly azz racist tattoo face name is should already be six feet under.
Time to go back to "eye for an eye" for awhile!
