cylinder plating

I used US chrome. They treated me right and give a discount if you belong to a registered local snowmobile club.

I had US chrome do one before in 3 weeks plus shipping--Is Mill--faster--thanks!
Yes Millenium can be faster. They offer a 4 day turnaround at no extra charge. I used that service twice this season. Shipping time isn't included though, but i'm sure you could get it overnighted or shipped faster if you want to pay. I've used both places over the years. U.S. chrome is going down hill in quality IMPO. I've had them weld exhaust bridges and they come back with the exhaust sub ports completely blocked off with weld. Luckily i do porting otherwise i would've had to send it back to have them or someone else clean it out. A guy i know just had this happen at U.S. chrome and he doesn't do porting so he will have to send it back or figure out something. One of the cylinders i had done from millenium this year need both bridges welded. It came back PERFECT and in 4 days. Bolted it on and let er rip. Millenium gets my vote by far.

US CHROME! I find there plating to be the best. They dont have this over abundance of plating that lowers your port timing like millennium does. The only think i find with us chrome is you should run a tap to make sure all threads are clean.

But if you would like to try something diff you could go to northwest sleeve and have steel sleeves put in. if you ever have a piston failure all you have to do is run a hone and new piston and away you go. Longevity is along time. for years sleeves were used and with alot of miles. just an option

What company makes over sized piston's? Oem? Wiesco?

It depends on what the engine is and what pistons they use for that particular big bore. Some big bore use pistons from say watercraft engines. When they do that there may be oversizes available since most watercrafts use cast sleeves yet.

With most places you can either send your pistons with your cylinders and they can match them up or you can buy your pistons from them. I know US Chrome offers this service.

Over abundance of plating?? Can you explain this. Ive given them (Millennium) my cylinders and the specs I wanted and they came back exact.

most platers want the pistons to accompany the cylinders or they supply them to send back with the cylinders to be the best they can be...at least thats the way MONGOOSE does it in B.C...do these other guys do it as well..??

There's really no need to send a piston if you're going with stock bore size. For example, if you send in a polaris 800 twin cylinder, the bore is 85mm. It would come back at 85mm exactly just like oem. The only time you'd need to send a piston would be if you want a different clearance. Say if you want to run Wiseco pistons but you want .008 clearance, then you'd send the piston with so they can measure it and make the bore to the correct size.

The only way you would know the top timing edges of your exhaust/transfer ports are a .5 mm or more lower is if you do porting like I do and have made yourself a specially modded digital caliper for measuring port edges from the top of the cylinder. Makes for a lot of work on a 3 cylinder drag motor that needs to be exactly to spec.

In the past have also found the Millenium to be softer than some other places, my guess is they have a higher percentage of nickel to carbide than some. Carbide burrs cut it real easy where others take some real work and makes for a sore hand and wrist by the time you get done.

Good Luck

Exactly LRD. You can feel it also if you run you finder into the transfer port and you will feel a lip left from the plating. I find US chrome to go back in and clean there excess off so you will have the port timing you sent them. also i have seen millenium deck the tops of the cylinders with a belt sander too and you will have a shorter cylinder. i had one that was .030 shorter after i sent it to them for an xcr 800 i had.

In the 22 yrs of business,,, Ive used langcourt/ us chrome/ power seal/ millenium.

langcourt wsa the thinnest plating and brittle, power seal is an embarrassment !! us chrome WAS great. Millenium has earned the top spot. 20 yrs of porting and I have never ever seen this port lowering issue ever...BUT everyone has had some issue some time with some one..

It gets old hearing ( you are the only one it has happened too ) so I do believe it can happen. I do 100-130 cyls a yr with millenuim and the worst case for me has ben a few clearances not up to snuff, the 1200 cat big bores tend to come back with tight bottom clearances. those long skirt fingers must ring a bit when honing !! LOL but .006 at top and .002 at bottom does suck for the guy who just bolts them on...poor SOB...

Sent Scott an rm 85 cyl last friday. ITS back this am !!! perfect job too.. WHew !!! thank god, the little kid woould be fumming if he couldn't race saturday...:face-icon-small-ton

No shop is perfect, so use your own judgement and be up front on your expectations..

No matter what you buy, OEM or aftermarket, no matter what part, you need
to check it. I bought a major aftermarket head with two sets of domes, it was 10 to 12 thou low on the waterjacket surface sealing area between the cylinders. It had grooves you could feel with your finger nail. I do heads myself with a 30 year old bridgeport that look better. But not dome inserts, thats the only reason I bought them. Guy should be really embarrassed!

Good Luck

you get one from chucaroo too..?? mine was .010 below !!! Junk.

I must also recant on Millenium.. the 85 cyl arrived friday, ports were welded !! and NO i did not ask for them to weld..clearance was tight too. by just .0015 but.. enough to sieze it tight before he even made it to the first turn..AND i used an old piston to make sure it was loose..not enough..farg~!

NOW i'm really ashamed for sticking up for them and pissed. 4 hrs of driving to be made a fool..
