Cylinder Honing?

What do you guys use for de-glazing a steel cylinder? Just a ball-type hone or will that damage the ports?

I like the ball hones a little better. I just use a bucket with warm soapy water and hone the cyl right in the bucket. Works well !

I don't think you are supposed use a ball hone with ports. I would use a flat stone type hone, actually that is what I did do.

Used a ball hone one time...I could see where if I continued useing the ball hone the ports would have taken a beating...so I switched to a three stone hone...my expereances...Dino

Make sure you use a hardback hone, not the type with the spring mounted stones. A hardback hone such as a Lyle 15000 or a Sunnen will do the job. The Lyle is excellent quality for the price (About $150.00). Using a hardback will also help true your cylinder. The stones are quite long and will not snag the port edges.

I like the 3 stone hones....ball hones could potentially damage the ports.
