Custom/Simple Gas Rack

I finally found a place with some angle aluminum and got a simple gas rack together today.

Parts list:

1/8"x1.5"x3' 90* angle aluminum [$15.99]
4x 1/4" carriage bolts [$.48]
4x 1/4" nyloc nuts [$.52]
4x rubber grommets [$1.48]
8x 1/4" washers [~$.25]

Total: ~ $18.72

I installed a rubber grommet and washer under the angle al. in order to raise it up over the wire protector running down the center of the tunnel.

Will see how it holds up/works this weekend.
Only concern is some slight rubbing against the underside of the seat. I tried tucking it up real close, and mounted on top of the seat post bracket..

~$20 and some fabbing sure beats $65-120+ for other options..for me. And I can feel special about building something myself. :P

Oh, and just a note/fyi: 1 1/4" long bolts...are way too long. 3/4" will probably work fine. 1" (maybe) if you plan to use the seat post mounting point as I did. It will depend on your gas can I spose.

Anyway, some pics.

Thanks for posting those pics. You just gave me a great idea for when my 2012 Pro comes in. Those running board supports and seat support are going to be orange too since I am getting the orange one. :thumb:

Nice job! But I have to say, this one sled that doesn't need extra gas weighing you down, Even the turbo Pro's go 50+ miles in 2'+ of blower on a tank of gas.

I agree, and probably 75% of the time I will not "need" it.
Sometimes we end up doing quite a bit of road/trail riding in/out and its a better safe than sorry situation.
Another reason I didn't see the need to spend a bunch of $ on something that would only get used 2-4 times a season...if that.

I've been keeping track of fuel usage/mpg.
Day 1: 53.1 miles / 7.09 gal = 7.49 MPG (quite a bit of trail riding)
Day 2: 48.8 miles / 7.72 gal = 6.32 MPG

Haven't ridden any stupid deep days.. The above snow conditions were generally in 3-8" give or take a few inches.

But even at 5-6 MPG, on an 11.5 gal tank, equates to: 57.5 - 69 miles per tank.

nice little setup, ima make something like that to carry 2 10 litre cans...
Even with the pro getting 50+ miles a tank.
Cuz when we ride the Ice cap(insanely big) in whistler we usaully put on 100 miles in a day!!
bring as much gas as you can bring! and even then you might run out.
Thanks for the idea and parts list!
Cheers
