CROSSFIT is for Social Douchebags

My biggest gripe with crossfit is the fact that it all started as an ALTERNATIVE to expensive gym memberships. i.e., dragging tires in your yard, beating slaves back with it was legal, ect. Then, it blossomed into a 149 dollar (quadruple most gyms) membership place to work out, and also seems to be more about the social occasion than anything.

Kudos to the guy who thought of it. Practically no overhead. You rent out a non climate controlled sh** warehouse, stuff it full of tractor tires and a few old rusty free weights that Gold's threw away, and charge 149 a month for a membership and the trout swim upstream in droves to pay you to use it.

Most crossfit "boxes" (cant call it a gym) have some sort of a "wall of fame" for injuries sustained during training. bloddy knuckles, ect. Am I the only one who sees something wrong with that?

crossfit is really nothing more than a place to throw away money and your back. dead lifting against the clock against a bunch of single mothers? for real?

Doesn't affect me, doesn't bother me.
Therefore I not worry about it.

Pot meet kettle, lol.

Its super easy to poke fun at any type of gym. Koolaid crossfit drinkers, meatheads at golds, pansies at planet fitness, curl in the squat rack / glamour muscle bros, etc. Social douchebags are everywhere in every facet of society.

None of the stereotypes you listed are prevalent at the crossfit gym / box / whatever that I work out at, and if it was then I would not work out there. Have been to several and have never seen what you are referring to, not saying its not out there, but it is a moronic small minority. It is very simple (and simple minded) to paint an entire group because of its moron minority, we deal with that constantly as snowmachiners and it really is a mindset that needs to stop.

I do agree that there is nothing revolutionary about crossfit in regards to the workout. High intensity interval training has been around forever. Problem is most traditional gyms do not lend itself to that type of workout (bumper plates, oly platforms, tires, medicine balls, etc). Crossfit does a good job of developing a workout for you where you just show up, do your workout, and go home. Makes it much more convenient for people, and people don't mind paying for convenience. Free market and it is proving successful, good on them.

I stick with what works for me, crossfit has shown results that 20+ years of lifting for athletics has never done. To each their own, and the most important thing is to actually get and do SOMETHING.

Which is what? You mind elaborating?

The heavy Olympic and compound lifts have shown progressive gains over time, sure not as much as doing Starting Strength or 5-3-1, but I am after explosive athletic movement across a wider range and this program has shown great results in less time.

I don't care about my 5K or 10K times and much prefer getting my cardio in by a combination of lifting, sprinting, jumping, pushing, pulling, etc. This has improved my athletic performance in work, sports, motocross / mtb / sleds, and general daily life.

The combination of strength, speed, explosiveness, and stamina is what I am after. Crossfit has shown to be the most efficient way for me to achieve that.

Yep. But I am just a silly Kool Aid Drinker too. Crossfit is definitely not for everyone. It took me a solid couple of months to buy in to the program. But I have seen phenomenal results from it, especially from a performance standpoint. Plus, I like the comraderie. I work out with quite a few firefighters, paramedics, policemen, and other public servants. Most of them seem to be great people. Oh yeah, and some single moms too.:face-icon-small-hap

I need to hit the gym myself but my son spends a lot of time at Golds. He spent every summer and almost every night after school at the highschool gym. Sure he built muscle and bulked up.

But then he wanted more, and started the crossfit program at Golds. Made a huge difference. Much more rounded training than the standard dumb bell type work outs.

The thing that is impressive is the big tough guys, that are all bulked up and pushing drugs don't do well at cross fit. They might be able to lift a small car off the ground but they couldn't run 1/2 mile to save their a$$. So I think crossfit is a great well rounded training.

I would bet a grand a solid crossfit guy will out endure the couch racers and the old school bench press only guys hands down.

Olympic lifting should always be kilos period. Red plates are 25 kilos, in crossfit they make up their own weight system

Say what? What is this mysterious weight system Crossfit invented? Weights are weights, use them for different lifts. Pick them up and put them back down, then repeat.

Real Olympic Weights:

25 kg red
20 kg blue
15 kg yellow
10 kg green
5 kg white
2.5 kg red
2 kg blue
1 kg green
0.5 kg white

Crossfit:

45 LB Red
35 LB Blue
25 LB Yellow

Its metric color system vs. imperial weight color system. Was like that before Crossfit.
