crank question

I have a 05 rmk 900. I don't know much about these engines. I blew my crank the other day, it broke on the outside of the case where the primary goes on the shaft. There is still about 3/4 of an inch of shaft still sticking out or the engine. My question is "What is the pto end of the crank and is that part replaceable without changing the whole crankshaft?

The PTO end of the crank is the part on your that broke off.. Its the end of the crank shaft that the clutch slides onto.. It is a replaceable part, but the motor needs disassembled to pull the entire crank and the entire crank would need to be inspected to make sure the rest is still good prior to putting another PTO end on. The crank is also pressed together so not something you can just do yourself w/out the proper know how and tools.

YZ 400 is correct the cases are also very likley damaged and will need replacing . There is a crank update kit that includes a new primary available from Polaris for around 1k If I remember correctly. Or Indy speciality (INDYDAN on this forum) makes a nice billet crank upgrade for the 900 either way this will be a costly repair.

crank

Go to your polaris dealer. Polaris make a new crank setup with a bigger pto end. It comes with all bearings, seals, connecting rods, and a new clutch. It's about 1100 cdn. I put a rebuilt crank in and it lasted less than a 100 miles so I had to do it again.

Markoo, How many miles do you have on the new crank?
Is the crank kit you used the one with the larger PTO end and comes with a new 115 belt also?

Mine also did the same as yours did, broke right on the tip ripped the clutch off. I was lucky it happened before my warranty ended so they replaced it with the new thicker taper crank which I believe came with the crank, clutch belt and they also had to redo the whole engine. No problems yet with new crank, mind you only about 600 miles on it yet. Just had to change gaskets and o-rings due to engine over heating and checked the crank and cylinders. Still looks like new.

If I had to cover out of my pocket then I most likely would of went with indydan's crank. Good luck with which ever way you go. If I were you I would get the thicker taper crank instead of changing just the pto end of crank or go the indydan's route. I think he is a member on this site and not sure what all comes with his crank.

Put the updated (06) pistons in it while you are at it.

Go to the sticky threads and read through them and see the other stuff that you need to either fix or at least check while you are at it.

Or just kick the thing into the trash heap and buy something else (not another 900).
