Cracked Gas Tank

Just got my sled out and to my house today and noticed that I had gas leaking out of the top of the tank. Low and behold... cracked about 3/4 of the way around the neck. So it looks like I will be replacing my gas tank. Are there any tips, tricks or secrets to removing the tank and replacing it? Thanks in advance.

Buy some Goop or E6000 and give it try first. I never thought it would hold a Camo Extreme together but, it did for as long as I owned the sled and was still going strong. It might save you a bunch of money.

Also, if that won't work there are aluminum sleeves that fit right into the tank neck that might help as well. Do a forum search and I'm sure you will find it.

that link is for the oil sleeve, which I have one on my oil tank. I'm talking gas tank.

Take off or new member gas tanks.

I'm looking at getting a new tank. I am calling a somewhat local dealership tomorrow and see what they say. All the other Arctic Cat dealerships that were local are not carrying Cat anymore, which is an issue for us out here that have Cats. If you have new or take off's, I am interested in that as well. From what I understand, Cat had a recall on these tanks?

Call Cat customer service, I thought I heard they were still replacing them under warranty.

Oops....you're right. That is the oil tank cap sleeve. Sorry, my mistake.

However, a sleeve like that would sure be an option, if anyone made one!

I went through the same thing at the end of last season. Arctic cat dealers are hit and miss whether they are going to honor the recall at best. Rather than dick with them Eric at Racin' Station (RACINSTATION) had a like new take off tank. Much more cost efficient than new. As far as removal and replacement it is pretty easy. You have to pull your seat, fuel pump and pickups out of the tank and then it is 4 bolts, two up front on the upper part of the tank by the steering post, then two at the rear of the tank. I am not at all connected to mmsports or Racin' Station but hit them up and save some money and grab a take off tank and install it yourself.

Thank you for the reply. Sounds like the 2 dealerships that I contacted want me to buy a new tank. $400+ for one. I am very interested in a take off tank either from Racinstation or MMSports.

I have had good luck with a soldering iron, just run it around the crack and the plastic melts together. I have fixed a few of the 90's skidoo gas caps like that too.

From the guys I have talked to the supposedly new tanks look exactly the same as the old ones. I don't think there is a dam bit of difference. I know of guys that had the new tanks and they did the same thing. Arctic Cat dropped the ball on this for sure.

I would probably need some filler to fill in the gap from the crack. I would say there is a good 1/8" gap. Maybe I will experiment with this tank, but I think I'm going to get a new or take off tank to replace this one. Another 1.5 inches or so and the neck will come off.

Wow, that is quite the gap. They do make plastic welders, I have one, haven't used it yet.. lol. it comes with different types of plastic filler rod.
