cr500 thermostat?

anyone ever installed a ktm thermostat on a cr 500? I 'm looking for how-to ideas.

I am in the process but don't have the solution yet. My plan right now is to take tee the two coolant lines coming out of the heat into one line which will plumb into the bottom of the KTM thermostat, make sure to plug the small bypass port on the t-stat. Then just run hose from the two ports on top of the t-stat to the top of each radiator. The problem I ran into while I was trying to figure it all out was that that there is not much room for the t-stat so it looks like I am going to have to put it back by the carb which will require some 90's on the coolant lines coming out of the head. If I get it figured out I will take some pictures.
 
that was as far as my thinking went but I did not try it, it looked at first glace that it would fit there on the right side. maybe not huh.

u say block the bypass off? I read that last thread on that topic sounds like maybe drilling a small hole in the stat as well. Just fitting it in is the struggle, I'll keep at it.thanks
 
Just a thought here, but are using the 70 degree celcius thermostat? 2 strokes run cooler than 4 strokes and 70 degrees is probably too hot
 
The Thermostat is real important for EFI bikes to keep them from over fuelling
when running cold.

I would not bother with the CR.

If in doubt tape of some Rad and put a coolant temp gauge on it so you know what temps you run.
 
I have the KTM 4 stroke t-stat which is a 70 degree Celsius, the 2 stroke t-stat's open at 50. So is there any harm or loss in performance not having hot coolant on a two stroke? I may scrap the idea if there are no benefits.
 
Hot coolant will probably protect the motor from a cold seize, but warming it up before you pin it will do the same thing.
 
Good topic. The 2 strokes do run a little cooler than the 4 strokes. I have found with a heat gun that the snow against the engine, "all aluminum" sucks the heat out so efficiently they run super cold. I have seen only 90 degrees Fahrenheit temps in the pow. The 2 stroke motor produces it's best power a little cooler as well. I installed the 70C KTM thermostat on mine. That's 160F. With that i found 160F is the "max" it will ever get. When the thermostat opens, the temp drops immediately and modulates below 160F down to around 130F. Those are real good temps for a 2 stroke. I will keep an eye on it and post what I am seeing.
The Ideal temps for a 2 stroke are in the 130F to 150F range so I'm thinking the 70C is about perfect.
 
You guys should check out the berg stat it only has 3 ports! And the hose orentation is like a 30 degree angle! Cycle buy has the parts fische on line!
 
Just to throw some more food for thought into the mix i talked to Adam millar of Millar Engines (huge CR500 porting/engine bulder) and he has a customer in Sweden that races on the ice in cold weather and he runs two thermostats out of the 2002 KTM 200 EXC (single in and out 50C). One in each line. Says it works perfect. I'm not sure how much snow he gets on the engine though.
 
I'd like to hear CDaddy chime in about his CR500. He has a few miles on his in Revy. Carb heat ?, Thermostat ? Pipe wrap ? Carb cover ? How is the bike working ?
