CPI XP Turbo installed. BSP Tech Support

Yes CPI does make an XP kit, I believe I have #6. My search for a turbo kit began last spring and there actually was/is not a lot of choices. Back then all I knew of was the CPI, a couple of aero kits and the one r&d was developing. I had done enough reading of turbo threads over the years that I did not want an aero plus the cost and I wanted to give the r&d kit some time to fully develop.

It was around last spring when I was noticing this guys posts on here and he seemed to really know his stuff regarding doos and turboing them. I read all of his posts and started asking him questions. He is a mountain of knowledge on boosting sleds and freely gives answers and information. I'm talking about Gus Bohne, aka BSP... Bohne Stock Performance. If it wasn't for Gus' advice and help I don't think I would have went through with the kit and actually getting it running would have been a nightmare. He has given enough information out on here for people to build entire kits from scratch. Just want to give credit where credit is due.

Now onto the kit. I had spoken with Mike a couple of times at CPI and had my lists of questions and he answered them all well enough that I thought he had this kit figured out so I took the plunge and ordered it this fall. The engineering and fabrication of the kit is awesome, very nice craftsmanship. The kit is includes everything to get boosted but does not include a BOV, clutching or any engine monitoring gauges. It does have boost and fuel pressure gauges. So if you buy this kit you can count on buying a BOV(I believe it's mandatory after riding it) an egt or wideband a/f and some clutching.

I had to source my own oil pump as CPI was waiting for weeks for them to show up and I finally said ship the kit without the pump so I can work on the install. Thanks to Gus and the power of the search function here and on dootalk I got a pump locally and it is used by others for turbos and has a good reputation. I had to make several trips for supplies, fittings, hoses, nuts and bolts. Lots of the required items are included but not all of them.

The install went pretty well other then a few delays when I needed parts and can't get them at 10 at night when I am working on it. There was a mixup from the turbo supplier and the turbo came with the standard housing that you see on most kits, it has tube fittings and the CPI kit is designed around flanged fittings. Mike got on the phone and had the proper housing shipped directly to me, an unfortunate mistake but it cost me a week. My last delay was a fitting on the oil reservoir for the return from the turbo needed to be relocated, it just would not work where it was originally welded. Another lost day and a bill from a welding shop. I am not bashing CPI, just telling my story. Everything fits great, I only have to put in the intake, and it is another nicely crafted piece.

Anyway we have a blizzard blowing through here on the flatland and I finally got everything plumbed so around the block and down to the park for a few hundred yard rips. WE HAVE BOOST! Holy smokin eh-holes, 15lbs and it's bouncing off of the rev limiter. Called my tech support (BSP) and we discussed everything and made a change and bingo 8-10 lbs now, sweet. Just need some seat time now. Biggest concerns are reeds and raves and of course not blowing it up but it feels pretty clean at my elevation.

cool. thank you for the post and pics.
Where does cpi put the power jets? What size diameter is the charge tube from the turbo to the plenum?
I put a set of boyesen turbo reeds in my xp. They are the stock reed replacent petals. I will give these a try and see how they work.
Hope to have my turbo xp runing in a week or two.
Makeing my own kit. ben reading on this forum all I can for the last year or two on turbo's. Have lots of turbo street bike experiance.
Have had some help from dave, and others on this board.
Keep us updated on how it runs and works for you.

Good to hear. Mike is a great guy and builds good stuff. I stopped in their shop a while back when they were building the kit and was impressed with the fit up. Better than their REV turbo in my opinion. The intake is pretty trick and should work really well. I see it's not in the pictures so maybe they changed it since then. Keep us posted on how it runs.

Oh and Gus is great too. Definately a good resource!

Post a pic of the intake setup please. I've got an idea scratched together, but without parts in hand its hard to really see where it will all end up.

Good deal Blair, Glad to be of assistance.

Its nice to be around guys that enjoy this as much as I do.
All you guys make it worth the b/s the internet brings with it.

The costs variations between builders is now more visible .
Proper gauges, and the little errors here and there are what the more costly systems avoid.

Now I just wish I was there to ride toooo:mad::mad::mad::(:(:(

Your call yesterday after the maiden ride made my day !!,,it finally snowed here last night, pump on my curtis 3000 plow sheared this morning !! great,,,nice way to say HELLO plowman !!!
Weatherman says it will be all melted by noon,,, 2 inches at best..is what we got..

season ends to day for deer,,,,,NOW it snows..sweet thanks muthanature:face-icon-small-hap

Looks good. I question if you are going to have issues with the oil tank. Seems like if you are pulling a hill, the oil is going to be at the back of the tank causing a restriction to the oil dump and might be enough to cause the oil to slip past the seals in the turbo.

I don't know how likely it is as I have no real experience but it came to mind.

Dave or Gus would probably know if it was an issue.

I'm not sure what Gus had him use for an oil pump, but I have a good idea. I am quiet fimilliar with the CPI kit;) and if Gus recommended the pump I think he did there shouldn't be an issue. The CPI oil pump is uhmm, well it's not there so no worries:). The thing I would do is put some antiroll over/check valves on the oil tank vents. Those big vents dump oil fast when you dump it on it's lid.

The pickup in the reservoir is actually built below the bottom of the tank, if that makes sense, but you bring up a good point.

I LMAO on the phone when Mike at CPI said they're vent hoses just run them up in the chassis and zip tie them, oil only leaks out if your sled is upside down. After I stopped laughing I said my sleds upside everyday, several times. I have put oil tank breathers on them, it should stop the oil from running out. I looked around at several check valves but didn't like anything I found.

Good move:beer;. The laughter would have been my response too:D.

Wow this thing rips! Need more pin weight but they're fully loaded, banging off the rev limiter here at 3000' in clicker 1. Supposed to have a custom set of ramps from dynamoe joe coming, maybe they will bring the r's down. I am now a ditchbanger but lost my hood out there somewhere, gotta go see if I can find it. Need to fab up a headlight support and old intake block-off.

Hood - OOPS!!

:eek:The good news is i didnt run it over - i never noticed it was missing.
Just to confirm what Canuckle was saying. I only rode it a quarter mile - And yes it pulls like - WoW!! - I looked at the boost gauge but as always with these turbos you cant look down long enough to focuss.
Did you find the Hood?? - Or did you leave your garage without it??

Ryan,

You guys are having to much fun !!

Pin and ramp will be good , another tooth up top tooo.

When you get ALL the pieces in the clutch add another tooth and just enjoy..:D
Maybe Joey will get a chance to swing a leg over it sometime..his ramps will be a nice addition

Gus
Dave you are correct on all counts ..thanx

Awesome stuff !! I'm chomping waiting for snow, these two stroke doo's rip! I had a tear watching Josh drive away with mine today. There was some sentimental feelings. He'll be making believer's out them in Iowa real soon:D:eek:

With out Gus I would never be were I'm at today with the two-stroke turbo stuff.

The cold air and snow are coming Gus. Can't wait !!!

Steve

Blair and Ryan never met yah, but welcome to the show.....
