Cost to Title/Plate new trailer...WTF?

So even tho had a helluva time and a pita and a lot of $$$$ later to plate/title my last trailer correctly...I decided, well I'll check into doing my new one.

I go in, sit down, she says how will u be paying, cash or check. I say, well I have 80 in cash so cash, np.

She says let me check the price......$405

And I say, four HUNDERED and five dollars??????

I'm like ok..well, I'll have to come back some other time.

So seriously, how can plates cost 405$?? thats the most rediculous thing I've ever heard?

If i claim the paid price was $500 instead of $5000 will this price be lower? I just dont' get it.
Does metal and paper costs go up 200% per year like snowmobile parts do or what? LOL

She said something about tax? and I was like...what tax?? but just walked out in frustration instead.

I guess I understand why ppl play the system/games to get around this kinda BS, I'm just dumbfounded.... :face-icon-small-sad

DJ--thanks for the heads up as I went to the MVB to license a boat trailer but since it was from out of state, I have to drag it over to an emmission/inspection station to certify the VIN#. It was my understanding that you have to pay state sales tax plus a use tax plus the title fee. I payed $1,250.00 for mine---I wonder what suprise I'm gona get?

You are paying sales tax on the purchase price.

YOu need to tell them that you paid $650 for the trailer, or some other low ball amount.

I screwed up at the DMV and told them the true price, then I went "DOH!!!!!"
But I already had told her the correct amount.:eek:

i dunon much about taxes and all that but.. the guy who bout the trailer originally would have paid SALES tax, right? why am I paying for it again!? it just seems fishy.. i have the best of times when i have to go deal w/ the dmv...everytime...

it sounds like sales tax (using 7%) would be 350$ on 5k$ purchase...so then theirs the plate ant title fees (i know titles like 7$), and then i'm sure they got tax for having to type on their computer? and tax for using paper to print the new title. lol

yep thats the plan now, i'll go to a diff person/palce next time.

Colorado is real funky with this stuff - with vehicles it is based on the value (THEIR value - not anyone logical) AND the weight so my 01 Duramax is still north of 250 a year even though it is old. I thought trailers were a flat fee - my 2 place open cost me like 18 bucks a year. I wouldn't pay it until I knew for sure what I was paying....

Called Jeffco MV. The trailer is subject to 7.56% of their blue book value--trailers don't have a BBV so its the price you show on your Bill of Sale. Then there is a $20.00 license fee and a $7.40 Title Fee.

If you bought it from a dealer, he should have collected the sales tax.

sales tax

You will get hit with sales tax every time something titled changes hand.
Each state is a little different, in Indiana you only pay sales tax on the difference if you are doing a trade. So anything I buy from an individual is always and even trade.

Dang, that makes me feel pretty good about my Montana fees! 4-place open trailer cost me about $84 and the good thing is that it's a permanent plate/sticker so that's it as long as I own the trailer!

I found that out as well DJ.... I just bought a 2 place echo here in the springs. I did the low ball price, 100, but even then, it was going to cost me 40/yr..... I am doing it up in ID, where I can get 10 year plates for 35..... Work the system...

Welcome to getting screwed by the gov. They tax the same thing over and over again when it changes hands. Sales tax is paid as many times as the thing changes hands. At least you are at a lower tax rate than I am, we are at almost 9% where I am at on cars/trailers etc. Oh and if you try to say you paid less it really doesn't matter, they charge you on the blue book value regardless of what you actually paid, unless of course you paid over blue book!!!!!

In CO if you buy from a dealer, they will collect the state portion of the sales tax at the time of purchase. When you get the tags, that is when they collect any county and/or city tax plus the plate and ownership fees. Just like a car, they want a bill of sale if it's a private purchase.

It's a rip off, just like other hidden taxes in this country. Taxes will be a major consideration when I vote this year!

Man you guys really have it tough south of the border. Just bought an 08 22' enclosed. Paid 1170.00 in taxes and just north of 400.00 in registation and insurance fees for 1 year.

Health care for every one. car care for every one. Food for every one. Homes for every one. Jobs for every one. Whats that spell, whats that spell? Who pays ,oh the Govt.oh! maybe we do. Its only going to get worse.:(

I bought a brand knew Conitnental Cargo Snowking all aluminum enclosed, the title calls it a utility trailer. I called our govt. insurance before I ordered it just to check how much it would cost for registration and insurance and was told approx $170.00 per year. I ordered it and when I went to insure it only cost $48.00 a year ! I had them double check and told them it was an enclosed trailer I was using for hauling sleds, still $48.00. I'm not sure if it is so cheap because it is classed as a utility trailer?:D

Boy I'm glad MT does the perminant tags. My sled trailer, both sleds, motorcycle, jet ski and it's trailer all have the perminant tags. We don't have a sales tax but we do pay a property tax when licensing. Trailers here used to have a GVW tax (was told a DMV that is now accessed to the tow vehicles. Total for all was less than $600. The '07 Motorcycle (purchase price $31,240) was the highest with personalized plates at $128.

Here it's like $80 one time fee per owner for a normal trailer, commercial use would be more.. not sure about the really big trailers.

but if your trailer doesn't have a vin, it's $75 fee to vin a trailer under 3200lbs GVW, and $450 or so for anything above
