Hello,
We need signatures on the petition accessed through the below link. It is a link to a White House program to respond to popular needs. Some 100,000 signatures are needed by July 10, 2016. Please click or cut and paste, sign and do the verification process!
Within the James Peak Wilderness Act, there is a provision that included preserving motorized (2 wheel drive car) access for the length of the Rollins Pass road from near Winter Park (Moffat Tunnel) across the Continental Divide to Boulder County. The Act contemplated repair of the Needles Eye tunnel route by Grand, Boulder and Gilpin counties.
On the Western Slope, Grand County, Colorado has lived up to the agreement and obligation, maintaining the road for summer use, assisting snowmobile and skier winter use, and plowing it open spring after spring.
The road involves Gilpin and Boulder County, as well. Neither have done their part, so only the Grand County side is in motorized use to (near?) the Continental Divide. We need the fed to look at this issue because Boulder (and to some degree, Gilpin) have shown no interest in complying with the Act.
Our last District Ranger supported the portal to portal route; I hope his recently-named successor will, too. In the meantime, and to help introduce the issue to a national audience, please sign the petition.
