I'm sure there are some police officers that are out of a job that would JUMP at the opportunity to have a job right now. Even with a guy standing in line for the job that is qualified, that doesn't mean he has had the same experience that the other one has.
The guy screwed up by messing around on the job playing WII. There is NO argument there from me, but I dont think the guy should be fired for it. IMO, The correct approach in my mind when someone screws up or isn't doing their job (depending on the situation of course) You start with a verbal a$$ chewing, then move to reprimands, suspension without pay, and then you fire them if they dont adhere to the standards of the job.
I fully understand the principal of being a public servant and putting in a full days work for honest pay. Being a hard worker gets you places, screwing around doesn't. Like I said, I am not arguing with you on that point.
He should have the 2 weeks without pay, work several hours without pay (to make up for the lost time on the clock) and a strong warning sent out to all LEOs that similar actions will result in much harsher punishments.
I just believe that people deserve a second chance to correct their actions when they screw up. Let this guy serve as a warning to anyone else out there not doing their job.
