Thoughts and Prayers are with the Family

This is a sad day in my office as we are well acquainted with the young man's mother. I have ridden Cooke City, and continue to ride in other western areas. The beauty and fun can sometimes fool us or make us forget the power of the mountain.

Not good. Crown Butte is a killer. I don't know how many people have died there but it is more than a couple.

Sad deal. This is a very good reminder to ALWAYS wear a beacon and have rescue gear, there was an avalanche warning for the area yesterday, there should have never been two people on that slope at the same time. Crown Butte is a very dangerous slope. RIP thoughts and prayers to the family and friends

So incredibly sad. Thoughts and prayers to the family.

Crown Butte has always been an incredibly dangerous slope, and there are many others in the area that are equally as dangerous. A simple google search for "crown butte avalanche" will yield numerous results. Some instances the rider was extremely lucky, some not.

Very sad. I was out there for the first time with a group two weeks ago, and that was the first area we played in. We left after about twenty sleds came roaring through half of them tearing up that slope trying to get the highmark........at the same time. This is definitely a sad reminder to take an avalanche safety course, wear a beacon, and practice with your group befor you go out (which we've made mandatory on every trip). My condolences to his family and friends.

This also brings up the point to talk to locals and experienced riders. Things like this one should never happen. Also brings up the point, if you see someone doing something they shouldn't, tell them. Let them know people have died right where they are riding. Crown butte is a killer and will continue to be for people that choose to dance with it.

I was up in Cooke last weekend and saw the remnants of that slide. It is one of the biggest slides I have seen. It took the whole mountain. It almost gave me chills looking at it.
