Converting an 06 900 motor to an 05 900...Inputs!

Ok..

Long story short..

I have an 06 900 as well as an 05 900...

I can get my hands on some SLP ported 05 900 cylinders for pretty cheap..
I know the common things that need to be converted from the 05 like

--05 ECU
--05 steering post
--few odds and ends
--i think i need to drop the 06 fuel pump and get an 05 fuel pump correct since the pressure is double in the 06 pump...
--also i think i need to just PLUG the fuel rail on the 06 fuel line right??

i have most of the parts already so it would be pretty simple

I would put the ported cylinders on my 05 900 but i am installing a Carls 975 Kit this summer on it already..

of coarse the main reason i wanna convert the motor to an 05 is..the ported cylinders...they are comparable to a 975 when done right (and these are)..and if i wanna go with a Turbo eventually, i can do it pretty simple since most of the kits out there are for the 05..2 injector setup..but i have a friend that has an 06 turbo..but it would keep it easy for me if i had both 05 motors...

this is something i really just came up with today..so let me know what you guys think..and what would need to be modified to do it...

thanks Ski..

i might need the nifty fuel pump that was sitting in that fuel tank you had there ;)

but no more freebies man..i owe you a fortune..ill give you $10, lol...jk

Shaun you won't need the 05 steering the 06 will work with the 05 but not the other way around.

here is what you will need

05 fuel pump
05 ecu
some how plug the top two injector holes on your 06 fuel rail. the 05 fuel rail won't fit your cases with out some modifications.

other than that you should be good to go

it will be alot easier than what i did. 05 to a 06

I was under the impression that the factory porting and the extra injector of the 06's made them more powerful and run better than the 05's. At least this is what my inside information told me a couple years ago. I know my 06 runs much better than the 05's in my group however, they aren't ported.

05 900s RULE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hehehe:D:beer;

DUH!! lol

sounds great...ill see what i can work out if i go that route...hardest part i think will be the fuel rail plug..

I should have an 05 fuel pump in the shop somewhere I could sell ya for cheap.

ill see if my buddy has a spare and if not, i will get yours for sure...let me know how much $ (pm me)

Well Dave...

in stock form, yes the 06 has better porting and overall performance..

but with the SLP porting, the 05 900 is by far better then the 06 ported...from what i understood at least...

plus the turbo on the 05 is better IMO...but at that point...a turbo on anything is BETTER, lol...

just alot easier for me since i have a chit ton more 05 parts then the 06..and i want the ported cylinders..

Sean, Are you still messing around with those jugs from my old 900?
I have a pump and computer. You will need to make sure with those jugs you have a 06 pipe and a slp reflash as well as a slp heads. The 06 is suppose to make more hp than the 05 but I do know that set up rocked for me right along side of a 975.If those are my old jugs be careful...... oh by the way did you get hit in the head by a frying pan.

Yes they are your old jugs..but i want the ported ones...i will find out about the ported 05 vs 06 so i have ground to stand on, lol..

I know the common things that need to be converted from the 05 like

--05 steering post (need 06 oil tank... steering post OK)
--few odds and ends

The 06 cylinders are as good as the SLP ported 2005's... Proof in the pudding... the 06 Performance edition kit does NOT need porting... the 05 does

SLP gets about 167hp out of the ported 900 Perf Ed kit.. about 172 from the 2006 with NO porting... HMMMMM

this is something i really just came up with today..so let me know what you guys think..and what would need to be modified to do it...

There are many considerations to think of.

eric...

now i knw why 2poor wants to smash me with a frying pan...lol

its ok..nothing a little learning doesnt fix....we all make mistakes and have silly ideas...lol

but the good thing is...i dont have to buy the ported cylinders now..lol

but if anyone is interested in the 05 ported jugs ill send u the info ;)

thanks again to all...

mth. you are right. There is more work for what gain he will get from doing the install Things like this is what made us have a gas engine test and trial. This may not sound like a good thing to do but what the heck has anyone on here tried it. if so step up and say we have done this and it will never work. Not trying to be rude just trying to suport a fellow explore.

Reggie's setups rock for sure...not meant as a "dis" at all.

The injector comment is if he wanted to run 2006 cyls with only 2 injectors and the 2005 controller.

Sounds like a great project!!

well my main "want" on converting the 06 motor to an 05 now is for the turbo kit i will be building on my 06 900 this fall/winter and installing summer 2011.

on the 05 900 turbo, you would normaly run the additude industries control box but i dont think the 06 turbo will run "correct" with the 05 control box..so unless i can get that 05 control box to run right with an 06 900 turbo, i either have to run a different control box, or convert to the 05 cylinders to run that box...

its all still in the early stages of planning, so just getting ideas and inputs is all...

2poor...when your not busy chime in, and be nice...or ill get you with the frying pan, lol...jk..

MH, be gentle...its all pre-planning, lol..

i think i can spare about 5HP...i cant barely ride a stock 900 to its potential w/o wrecking...so a turbo 900, minus 5hp is fine with me, lol.

I am pretty sure the 05 and 06 use the same attitude box .
It just plugs in to 2 injectors instead of 4 plus, power and ground.
Maybe Derek will chime in on this?

2005 t866's rip!!
