Computor question

First off let me clarify that I am dumber than snot on a tit when it comes to this stuff.

Recently I have had to call my cable/internet provider (Midco) quite frequently to reset my modem? Been losing signal to laptops, usually only one at a time, meaning one loses signal while the other keeps working. It happens randomly to different laptops.
Midco claims that modem is going bad. Does that sound correct?

Do I get another one through Midco?
Buy one through another source? (like Office Max)
How does a moron such as myself pick one out?
What do I look for?
Do some have better range than others?
For what it is worth, I have a range extender now.

Simplicity is a higher priority than cost to me.

Get modem from Midco. How new is your WIFI router?

Don pay for it however. If they can replace tell them to stick their monthly fee.

sounds like your router needs updating to me!

Yes. In that case still try to get the vendor to replace. If not go get the latest and greatest at Best Buy for 100ish and you are good to go. Very easy set up.

Thanks,
Now if I buy it elsewhere, can Midco still reset it remotely if/when the need arrises?

If you are paying for Internet thru your cable provider

yes , you can have them reset it remotely. If your modem/ router is 4-5 years old, U should have your provider upgrade your equipment, My cable provider charges me $6 a month rent for their provided Cable modem, and I tell them to give me the latest and greatest every 1-2 years. I experienced some issues last week with Charter . it was bad and then got worse up until the point their system went completely down, now it is good, I call them and raise he11 with them if my speed drops 5k. I pay for super fast , and Dangit, it better perform or I'm getting a discount on my bill.

New router

I also have Midco, had problems in the last house we had. I ended up going to Best buy and bought a pretty decent newer Cisco router as my last one came over on the Mayflower. I think it was around $80-$90 bucks. When we moved I went and bought a new modem also now I don't have to lease equipment from them. You might be better off if you just get it through them if you need tech support though. My son can play X-box, I can be on my lab top and my daughter can be on her IPOD and everybody is fine, yet too drop signal.

----I know there is probably not a Best Buy in Day country.:face-icon-small-win

Thanks guys.
I agree that since I am s s s s s s slow with computors I should indeed go w/Midco.

Upgrade...

Get a new router. Cisco has some awesome new ones. If you are using multiple cpu's, game machines etc a dual band will probably make a difference. I have a Cisco N-900 dual band that is wireless N and dual 450 bands. It works better than any others I have had recently and it has 4 gigabit - 10/100/1000 ports to connect wired devices if needed and a usb port. Part number on this one is EA4500 from Linksys/Cisco.

I bet it will change things for you...

Oh Ya...

You may (probably) still need a modem from your ISP to make things work on your end, and your network will only be as fast as the service they provide... (you should request an updated modem to go with the new router)

I'm not familiar with your provider but I run satellite and it has it's moments of pain!!! They all do due to traffic and bandwidth. Guess thats the way it is these days...
