just went to cosco to pick up a new laptop (upgrade our old one) and they had taken their old display down, salesman said that on the 26th that there was a new operating system comming out and to wait till than, was going to be better than the one out now.....so will wait and see.................:present:

Windows 7 will be released on the 22nd and may atke a few more days to get the machines to the store fronts. Wait for it, it will be worth it.

Unless you really need the performance, laptops really aren't that far behind. A portable has been my main machine for over 7 years now.

They don't last as long as a desktop will. They aren't as easy to expand (video cards, adding HDs, etc). You can still run multiple displays with them, doing it right now on my work setup. One display will be the laptop's display, 2nd is external.

If all you do is email/web and occasional word processing/spreadsheets, most flavors of Linux already have all that software installed for the low price of absolutely free. Ubuntu's the easiest install, and it includes more (and better, imo) software with that install than you have on your machine now. Mac is another option, although more expensive than an equivalent windows PC. The upside to either Mac or *nix is that they're not plagued with the viruses, spyware, popups, malware, etc that windows is.

And re: windows 7.... There's a handful of people that run it here (IT/Development guys) that say it's just as difficult as vista with no major performance improvements. YMMV.

I've bought 2 laptops in the last year, both with 17inch displays for about $600. I wanted to buy a mac laptop the last go around but I could not justify spending $1100 on their started system. The desktop computers I have purchased in the past have been $3200, $2400, $1200 and now you can buy a decent desktop for what $400. I put a faster processor, RAM, and bigger hard drive on for about $150 and it's still outdated and limited to what it will run. I was a tech for Gateway for several years and when computers back in 1994-95 cost about $2500 for a starter system and they easily went up to $9k, expandability was a huge deal. Now, not so much a big deal due to costs of new computers. Also I bought mine through Dell's Outlet and saved about another $400 on an upgraded system. I did this with my last 2 laptops that are both running strong (Girlfriend need one). I will say be careful with the power cords on laptops. If you have to replace one because it wont charge the battery just buy an aftermarket one on Ebay for $15 vs $75+ through the mfg. My 17' viewable Dell Studio in Blue with upgraded processor, ram, hard drive and few other bells and whistles cost me $608 with tax and shipping. And I'm still expecting the new windows in the mail from them as part of my purchase.

Here's a link to their inventory that you can filter the results.

Although I resisted Mule finally converted me to the Mac this time around and I am loving this computer. No performance issues at all and my only complaint is that it doesn't come with a fire wire port on the base model and to get it you must go to the pro. If you go Mac and think you'll need the extra Ram save your money and buy the Ram from New Egg or a similar online company. Yeah it was spendy but it runs smoother than any PC I've ever used and in the about 6 months I've had it, it hasn't crashed or locked up a single time.
