Company shipping costs

Has anyone noticed the rediculous prices some companies/parts suppliers are charging for shipping?

I've been a bit surprised actually. I got a 1.5lb box via ups today that was shipped approximately 250 miles and I was charged just over $10 for the shipping... and the box wasn't oversized or anything.

Hi Performance Engineering is the only one that hasn't been screwing me on shipping lately, they are still doing fixed shipping costs on dollar amount which is fantastic.

Maybe it's UPS that is the problem. Anyone in shipping have thoughts on this? It seems like UPS has gotten quite expensive to ship stuff with.

I've been shipping a ton of parts all summer and even with an account with FedEx and UPS and shipping to a business it's still about $10 min.

UPS is horrible, twice as much as USPS. Anytime I have something shipped I ask if they will ship USPS. Flat rate boxes are a great value.

Likewise, Living in Alaska you learn to have things sent via usps when possible. Even when you work for Fedex. Trust me, you do not want to pay list rates for overnight to here!

You think you have it bad. Try getting something shipped to Alaska. :D

what he said..to ship a trailtank up here ground service was gonna cost 185.00.:mad:....that is just crazy..I used to overnight(red label) torque converters for our race motors(8in. converter) and red label was onlt 53.00 ..I can imagine what it would cost today....:o

I was going to order a pri and sec spring from Babbits for my old Yami triple. After filling in all the ques, I went to checkout. The price for the two springs was $40 (not bad). Then the shipping charge, $16.34 to SD and a time of about 10 days! NO THANKS!! We no longer have a Yami dealer or I would have gone there in the first place.

I have a small hunting dog supply business and we ship our products via UPS and USPS. Just to ship a small ecollar box is $10-$12. It sucks, but the rates are set by UPS not the business you're buying from. To counter the shipping price shock, we've been offering free shipping which cuts into our margin. Effing shipping companies! I'm sure they raised the prices to "offset the high fuel costs" but the price of fuel is lower while the rates have maintained. Its the fleecing of small businesses!

I did a massive garage clean out and sold a bunch of parts this fall. I shipped about 50 packages through UPS and USPS. If you're shipping to a residence UPS is a minimum of $10. Then there's the dimensional weight....holy crap a 15 lb box with a hood in it can end up costing $50 to ship just within the lower 48. I tried shipping a few large packages without entering the dimensions just to see if I could get away with it, but every time UPS ended up charging my card the difference afterward.

I tried to ship as much stuff by mail as possible...too bad because UPS is pretty easy - enter the info online, print the label, and drop off at UPS store or terminal. Standing in line at the post office is not much fun, and then half of the postal workers seem annoyed when you want to ship anything besides a letter with a 44 cent stamp on it.

I had a 1.5 lb envelope shipped to me in MN, cost me $30. Def not UPS, it was the shipper making money off me. It was a $45 part, what a joke:mad: Be sure to know what they are charging for shipping before ordering!

Seems like some companies are using it as a way to supplement their sales numbers.

I ordered a small part from an online company. They claimed 10$ for shipping and handling. Which didn't seem too high until I received the package and it had 89 cents in postage on the envelope it was sent in!

Needless to say they will not be getting anymore of my business.

ups rates have gone up twice in the last 8 months or so, but we still try to ship everything out that is of reasonable size for 6.50-$8.00 to our customers, we figure we can eat a little freight if they are willing to order through us and not their local dealers:)

I still offer free shipping on most orders over $75. USPS is typically the best way to go for small boxes.

If your ordering from Ebay and the shipping is outrageous, that's because of the fee's that ebay and paypal charge, sell something for $300 and your going to kick over about 10% of that to fee's, hard to profit anything on that and then pay for shipping to boot. It's generally (I say generally) not the company that is screwing over their customers but more of the company trying to keep their azz afloat with all the fee's they have to pay related to online ordering. It isn't free to accept credit cards either, nor are the packaging materials free and most people generally do not want to work for free, so now you take that $30.00 part that you just made a whole $8-9.00 profit on and take out all those shipping related expenses and you find yourself in the hole pretty fast. That's why I implement a flat rate shipping cost on most of my online orders under $75, I can't tell you how many orders I get for $10 toys that I might make $2.00 on, I spend more than $2 on that one box in tape and packaging materials.

Try to order as much as you can at one time and you should get a good deal on shipping, at least you will from me ;). Cost of doing business is always increasing and the margins parts suppliers have to work on to be competitive is not, just like the cost to heat your house or drive your truck is always going up but look at your paycheck..... And wait until the Government starts paying for all their spending and the new health care bill, taxes on business will have an affect on prices.

There are parts I need that I don't sell, I just ordered a part for my heater the other day and it cost $13.00 and was the size of a shoe and weighed even less, they probably actually spent less than $7.00 to ship it to me and charged me $14. I pizz and moan every time that happens but then I look at what it takes for them to handle that sale and it makes sense. Either pay extra for the part or the shipping, one way or another the supplier has to make a profit.

You still have to be fair about it though, and if you choose to use the internet as your sales floor then you need to be prepared for some stiff competition and extra fee's that walk in customers wouldn't see. So, to charge $30 or more to ship a clutch spring, to me that isn't fair and I'd shop somewhere else.

That's my .02. Keep the "change".

Head to the local dealer and buy it. :) sorry couldn't resist.

UPS has been raising rates over the past year I noticed. And adding fuel surcharges. Shipping rates in general have gone up since the price of fuel sky rocketed.

USPS is the cheapest way to ship usually, but that is because they don't need to turn a profit. The Post Office is just another broke governmental system. Who cares if it doesn't make money, you will pay to keep it open via taxes. Which isn't an entirely bad thing, if I made use of it more. I ship UPS almost exclusively because of my corporate account(one franchise perk).

I have been there before when shipping is RIDICULOUS. I know I went to buy a Hard Drive for a computer off of Ebay. Found a place on there that had it like $30 cheaper than the place I normally deal with. So I went to order it, and noted "$30 shipped anywhere in the lower 48". $30 to ship a 1.5lbs hard drive that is the size of my hand? So I went back to my normal supplier, paid $5 to ship it and was happy to give them the business.

I know a lot of companies that charge a flat shipping rate. Yeah $10 is a lot for an $0.89 shipping, but then when you ship tires or big bulky items for $10, you're getting a hell of a deal and hopefully it all evens out in the end for the business that you bought it from. Thats the logic behind the high shipping on a small item. Also, as stated before, the ebay and paypal fees are brutal. I much more prefer to sell from my website than off of ebay, just so I don't have to charge as much or make ebay richer!

We finally got a decent rate from UPS after several years. We did the back-and-forth game with FedEx and UPS for years, one would give us a better rate so we would switch, then the other would get us an even better rate, so we would switch again. That's the only way we can afford to do Free Shipping on all our orders.

Don't have a local dealer, bonehead. Sorry, couldn't resist.;)

I went to the UPS store to ship a tank and they wanted $30, I said that I was going to check out the USPS and the lady told me what it would cost. On their screen it tells them what other companies charge for the same package. I saved $10 at USPS.

That seems to be the general consensus from ALL of the aftermarket companies I have ordered from gave always over-charged for shipping. When I sell something and ship it out, I ask for a round figure and send the change with a receipt back to the buyer. USPS is cheaper but size ans weight is limited so sometimes UPS is necessary.

I try to order all of my stuff when companies offer the "free shipping" sales if you spend over $100 or something like that.

I do that also. Whether the co's overcharge or not, you know about the charges ahead of time. If I or anyone else agrees to the charges, I wouldn't expect a refund. For example, I shipped out some things that I sold recently, and the actual cost of shipping is not only from usps, but my time and gas to get it out. When considering that, it's a losing proposition.
