Common issues with edge chassis RMK

A buddy of mine is looking at getting a 2004 RMK 700 vertical edge with a 144". I'm much more familiar with newer sleds and the common problems that plague them, but not the older ones.

What are the common problems with this model/engine and what should I look for if I go with him to take a look at it?

Did that engine have any common problems? Anything else to look for that goes bad over time?

Thanks.

P.S. on a side note, does anyone know why when I try to log into Snowest on the Tapatalk app, it says that I'm not in the correct group to login and to contact an administrator? It's annoying that I can't get logged in on Tapatalk.

The tunnels crack at the rear, just behind the black trim pieces, due to rapid thermal changes. The tunnels crack beneath the foot pads due to hitting a rock with the skis. Both can be repaired with short lengths of aluminum angle and structural rivets, and stainless steel bolts.

I had to pull the motor out of mine and found a crack in the weld below the oil tank. This would be on the engine bay area to the right rear of the manual starter. Not sure why it cracked, but had it tig welded and put the motor back in.

Overall the Edge was a pretty stout platform.

These sleds are pretty tough to beat for the money. The 700 motors run for ever. Ive seen a few have problems where the tunnel coolers enter the bulkhead area but thats not a major operation. all in all they have one of the best track records of any sled out there

Make sure to check the reed boots for rubs from the oil lines .Check the water pump belt. Also change the pull rope over to a heavy duty slp has it or I can get it from slp. Make sure to check the bearing on the cross shafts ifthe speedo ever stops you need to replace the lower bearing

I put over 13000 miles on my 02 rmk700 here in New York state.
No issues at all. But like like it was stated. Change the waterpump belt. A new recoil rope and keep good bearings in it.
On all my bid blocks I drill out and put a grease fitting on the waterpump shaft just as a precaution. Give it a pump every so often
I bent the tunnel on the 02 600rmk by carrying to much weight on behind the seat (knapsack) but I also run a Boivin skid and the rear mounting holes are 12" closer to the front of the sled

Those are fantastic machines.

Great ride, handling, and motor.

So reliable that they border on boring.

Thats funny " they border on boring" haha
I ride upstate NY. Mostly in the TugHill region which normally gets over 300" a year. Off trail riding is a breeze w/ the Edge RMKs even at 136 x 1.75 I never had issues. I upgraded to a IQ 600144 a few years back and wow! what a difference. You actually have to make the machine turn lean carve ect ect instead of the telling it
I still have a 02 rmk 660 w/ the Boivin skid and a 97 sks thats a cream puff. The 2012 adventure is a diff breed all together
