some buddies and I are thinking about driving up to revelstoke from Idaho around the first of the year. what kind of things will we need to get across the border besides passport, what kind of hotel situation is there. what about permits for the sled? any info would help

You should have your registration for your sled for proof of ownership, lots of hotels in Revy, a little tight on weekends but no problem during the week. If you are riding the hills with grooming there is a trail fee, if you are riding areas with no grooming no permit required. Trail fees are payed as you cross the booth at the trail head. Come on up you will have a blast, lots of snow in Jan.

Book your rooms ahead of time. We mostly stay at Days Inn, Super 8, or Peaks Lodge. They all have suites that can sleep 3 sledders for about $50 each per night. Make sure to ask for the "sledder rate"

Days Inn is right next to Zalas Bar & Grill, best restaurant in town and stumbling distance (parking lot sucks though):

Peaks Lodge, never stayed but have buddies who love it. Ride directly from the lodge to Boulder/Frisby mountain.

Glacier House - hotel & cabins - ride to your door. Never stayed!

At least 10+ more hotel/chalet/cabin choices...

Make sure to check out Sicamous area too. It is 30 minutes away and lots of awesome riding there. If you come through Golden it is worth a day ride at least. (2 hours East of Revy)

For snow reports and area specific questions, Snowandmud forum is the best for Canadian areas:

As for riding areas I don't know of a good site that lists areas in Revy, but the main Revy areas of Boulder and Frisby are huge and have all terrain and difficulties imaginable. Plus they are groomed twice a week. Mega snow almost every year. There are many more areas but a local or guide is recommended.

Oh yeah and make sure to stop off at the Sled shed in Revy. Colorful characters - Sled bums paradise. Ha

Boulder and Frisby, the main groomed areas are only 5 minutes. If you stayed at Peaks lodge or Glacier lodge you sled from your room. Both of these areas have warm up cabins on the moutain. Lots of other rides from 15 min to an hour. Some areas are closed after Jan.1st for cariboo closure, but all info for these is easy to get.
