Come on Skidoo

I am putting a new factory rebuilt shortblock (800HO) in an 04 Rev Summit as the "other" motor went down with a damaged crank and one cylinder hurt. When talking to Felkers out of Loveland they suggested the factory rebuild program and it does appear to be a pretty good program with a 1 year warranty. I got the motor in and did the change over work and dropped it into the sled.

Today I went to install the reed cages and for the life of me could not get the bolts started. I tried to start a bolt just to see what was going on. Well I discovered that Skidoo had neglected to tap threads in the cylinders. So I end up stuffing rags in the intakes and taping the threads after the motor is already in the sled. It would have been a piece of cake had I noticed it on the bench. It wasn't bad except for the very back one on the mag side, right next to the oil resivoir. It took me as long to do that one as it did the other 11! I am assuming somebody overlooked this with it being a rebuild and not a production motor. I hope the same guy that missed this was not the one who installed the "C" clips or I'm in big trouble. rickster

The reed bolts are self tapping. Bought a short block in the fall , but they informed me, sorry they didn't tell you and this is to late.

I looked at that but neither the original bolts (who knows if they are factory) nor the bolts provided by Boyesen where of the self taping variety. If that is the standard practice it would be much better for the installer to run the self-taping bolts in on the bench where you could better control alluminum filings as well as producing nice clean straight threads.

The XP chain case and reed cage bolts are self tapping. My experience is they never stop tapping, they take out the threads. I replace all of those bolts with real bolts which cost a bit but they don't end up stripping out the threads after a few times.

Good Luck
