cog belt walking

After I ride I notice my cog belt keeps walking off the edge of the large lower wheel on the drive shaft on my 800 Hawk. Anyone know off hand how to adjust this to stay in line while riding or why this is happening?

R and D minus the research.

If your machine is still original OEM specs, it still has th1360mm cog belt with extra pully. The tensioner cant take the extra force and is bending at the frame causing belt run off, and then will crack frame.

There is a brace developed by riders that the factory copied and offered as an update, but the right fix is to go to the 1280mm belt, 28t upper sprocket, and discard backward pulley. 503/600 gearing.

models

All 07 and other than Mountain 08s came this way.

I think I addressed this and other problems assoc with machines in topic Things To Look For.

You might also want to look and see if the lower pulley is walking inward. I've seen them rub the frame, pulley gets thinner and thinner......makes it look like belt walking out.

When looking in manual I notice it is missing one of the tension pulleys and only has three--so previous owner has removed and already put the shorter cog belt on. I do notice that the lower pulley is rubbing on the frame a bit on the top side...so it soudns like it is walking in which makes the belt look like its walking off.
How far out from the frame should the lower pulley be?? 1/2-1 inch?
And what are the steps to adjusting back?

Thanks guys!

pulley offset

on all the hawks I have delt with the lower pulley taper lock should be flush with the drive shaft. make sure it is good there and all should be good.

If your pulley isnt straight check to make sure your axel bearings arent bad and letting your whole axel tilt otherwise make sure the lockcollar is tight and the pulley is around 3/8 to 1/2 an inch out from the frame
