CNG Trucks

Anyone burn Compressed natural gas in their trucks? Thinking about getting one. Price around here at the pump it 1.59 gge. Only problem is no one sells or services them around here. I've heard they are big in Utah.

Where is "Here"?

In 2013 GMC will offer a 2500 Sierra that runs off of both CNG and pump gasoline. That might be a better option for you.

It won't operate on both at the same time but can switch between the two. You would have a range of 650 miles from both fuel tanks.

You can get 2x4 or 4x4, long or short box. You do lose a little bed space because of the black diamond tool box in the bed which serves as a fuel tank for the CNG.

Oh, it's the 6.0 liter and I think it will be offered in extended cab only, but I could be wrong about the cab configurations.

With both it wouldn't be so bad. I drove a buddies truck, years ago, when I wrecked mine. It sucked because you couldn't just get propane anywhere. It was 10 times worse than the old days of trying to find diesel in a bigger city. It was a 427 in a 1 ton dually. No power and no mileage. It got about 5 miles to the gallon. I'm sure the new kits are way better. This was back in the early 90's.

BCR has a great thread on this, can't remember the title of it, originator has a truck in the Idaho Fall, ID area, he covers a lot of the build, etc and info on fill stations. We ran propane back in the 80's, nothing like the cng options described on BCR. His system runs on diesel when the cng runs out automatically.

It's in "Locked and Loaded" section under "36 MPG out of my 450 horse duramax" on BCR. MPG claim was quickly corrected by one of the other forum members due to some miscalculation, but the rest of the thread is worth the read.

CNG is a good viable alternative fuel. The problem with it right now is that the infrastructure is very small for refueling, you will not be able to get it a lot of the places you go if you travel around much if you have places around home that can fill it and you don't travel much it makes sense. Also it takes a huge storage tank to get any range out of it so you wont have much room in the bed. Hopefully we will see a switch this direction in the future because I would much rather see us go to CNG than the other options out there.

The company I work for in Western Wisconsin is putting 20 Stations up by next spring in MN WI and IA, but I think they are one of the few if not the only convienence store in the country doing it. But I definatly see it catching on in the next couple years.
The local honda dealership has a few trucks and cars and they are certified to work on CNG. I took a 2004 6.0 2500 chevy and a 2001 honda civic for a test drive today. The truck was a bifuel so it can run on gasoline or CNG and the car was dedicated CNG. You could tell you lost a little power with the CNG in the truck but nothing overly significant. Wouldn't have known the car was CNG unless you read the sticker on the bumper. Both ran well.
They wern't cheap though 21K for the truck and 10k for the civic

Not sure around the SLC area but I know there are a couple filling stations in Vernal .... Thats been the big push out in eastern UT is to start running more vehicles on CNG.

We have some of our fleet trucks out there that had been converted to CNG, seems to work ok.
