Clutching Questions 08 XP 163???

Been on a Cat for a few years and have not paid to close attention to Ski-Doo. I picked up a used 08 XP 163 for my wife and to me it feels like the secondary is not working right. It backshifts fine, but the sled about throws you over the handle bars when you lift off the throttle. Is the new QRS really what I think it is? I think I might throw an older roller Cat on it, at least those worked. I know I have to swap the jackshaft, but I feel like Im riding a four wheeler with CVT clutches, and the compression brakeing. Maybe someone has some clutch suggestions for 6000'+. The wife gets to ride it tomarrow and I don't think she is going to like it. All my clutch parts are for the older TRA's and I haven't played with the newer ones much. Would like to toss something at it quick to make it smoother for her to finish the season with.

My clutching does the same thing. I love how it downshifts. It takes some getting use to but if she ever needs it going downhill through some trees it might come in really handy then.

Is it just a characteristic of the QRS secondary or poor clutching? When I lift I want the clutch to release, like the old days of clutching. This thing is thirsty on fuel too and I'm guessing it is due to the clutching. I thought the XP's sipped fuel? I did have it on the handle bars a few times today but I don't think it lost that much fuel. This thing is brutal to ride. From the catapulting clutching to the heavy steering and the gas guzzling, something has to change. Between my buddies 200hp Rotax triple and another buddies turboed Rev, I was the one dumping my spare gas in. If this thing can't be tamed, I'll have to let her ride my turboed M-7 and I'll nut up and ride this thing. Don't get me wrong, I'm hard core Ski-Doo, I have just been side tracked with Cat for a few years waitng for Ski-Doo to make something I was interested in and now I need some suggestions.

the "compression" breaking you have is probably from a secondary clutch kit....the heavier yellow spring and a steep progressive helix will make it feel that way. Like others have said, performance wise that much back-shift is a good thing but if it is your wifey's sled maybe performance isn't your top priority.

Regarding the gas, something is wrong if you are buning more than those mod sleds. You should get a good 50 miles of deep mountain riding out of a tank and some of your spare.

Dave Dave Dave, you and I both know you got tired of tweaking on the finicky turbo........I have one too. j/k the xp runs all day has no issues and is a blast to ride, so stop saying its your wifes!!!!! lol Big John from here was a big help on my 09

Is the clutching bone stock? Let us know what you have to start with. There are drastic improvements to be made from stock.

Luke, I have had no big issues with the turboed M-7, just dump some rocket fuel in and go. You know the road I have been down over the years for mod sleds and this thing is looking like it will be one after I get done fixing all of it's little issues. The clutching is just one issue and I'm not overly concerened about that because I will put a turbo on it here shortly when I get my spare turbo off the Rev. I was just looking for some quick clutching advise and yes I do need to know what I have in there now, because it has been clutched. So Iguess I contradicted myself and this will be a mod sled too engine wise, but man this chassis is a handfull. So far after yesterday riding, I dislocated my shoulder, no biggie, happens all the time, almost decapatated myself on a tree branch, rolled the sled and broke the spare fuel tank bracket off the tunnle, got down in the bottom of a draw and thought this might be the end, but after pinning my leg against a pitch stump with my foot in the stirrup going down hill and damn near breaking my leg I finally got it out and survived--barely. The chassis does rock if you can keep it under control. I will just have to get the chassis to work better before the turbo goes on.

Swapping an AC secondary isn't an option. You're going to have to dig into this 08 and see what has been done for clutching....sounds like it's been "played with".

Took the wife up riding this afternoon and she gave it her stamp of approval. She didn't care for the compression breaking though, but liked the sled. I disconnected the sway bar and will drop the front arm on the rear suspension this week to help on the steering issue. I need to do some measureing when I do swap the jackshaft, because I do not like the Team clutches at all and will either make the QRS work or put an old roller Cat on there with some modification. Does the secondary come off this thing or is it part of the jackshaft like they were doing a few years ago?

Thanks for all the advise so far.

The secondary is pressed on the jackshaft.

The QRS is a very good secondary, in my opinion. There is nothing to be gained going to a Team or Cat roller.

You'll be money and performance ahead if you go with a setup from Big John, WinterBrew or DJ, rather than putting money into a new jackshaft, etc. If it's a stock '08 setup, you'll be way ahead by changing ramps, pin weight and primary spring. $100.

DUDE...

try a green spring RER spring (grind off tab if its an older one)...the compression spring doesnt release belt like the cat clutch, the stock spring is stiff...the green will help.......easy to coast with the stock stuff, just keep throttle open a tiny bit, dumping throttle will cause the decel...if stock run a 470 main jet (shouldnt thirsty at all IMHo)...leave the gear for your wife...BJ
