clutch troubleshooting

Finally got my sled back together and went up to goldcreek to go for an easy test ride, went up about 7 miles and was doing some light climing and i felt something that i didnt like so i turned down hill and my sled died so i pulled the hood and looked at my belt and clutches and the drive clutch just looked weird so i started the sled and it tried to run away, i pulled the belt off and then started it back up and the clutch looked like it was aboput to wobble off like it was half engaged on one side and not on the other i dont know when it was cleaned last but im sure something is not right. Any ideas? Ive heard that these tra clutches arent too complicated maybe i could tackle it myself but i dont know much about clutches.

Ya, somethings not right, there are many possibilities. Goldcreek wa? We are in Auburn and would be happy to take a look at it if you want to drop the clutch off. :beer;
Happy to help with questions if you decide to do it yourself.

Yea i would love to bring it to you as soon as i figure out how to pull it im in bremerton, i just finished a top end and am sure that the clutch has never been properly serviced because the sled was just a pile when i bought it for 1500 and have been fighting it all the way. I have the part number for the puller i just have to call a dealer to order it.

If I'm not mistaken all you have to do to remove the movable sheave is undo the bolt holding the clutch to the motor. The movable sheave assembly is splined to the fixed sheave and will pull apart easily once the bolt is out. If you need to get the entire clutch off than you will need a puller. At least that is how mine is, but its an '02 700. I wouldn't waste money on a puller even if you have to pull the entire clutch, just ask around locally and see what comes of it. Hope I could help...

i had a simular experience couple years ago:(...turned out the bushing for the moveable sheave had "popped out" and bound up in the primary spring/cup... :eek: luckily a buddy had a small spring compressor made with 1/2" reddi-rod (all-thread) and some large washers-we were able to take the spring cup off and fish the bushing out + re assemble in the field so that i could limp the sled back to the truck (it had happened first thing in the day after driving 2 1/2 hrs to get to the hills:face-icon-small-fro.... so rather than wreck everybody else day:o...) the good news is like rmkrazi said the minimum you have to do is get the outer (moveable) half off to service it:).if this is what happened and you do decide to disassemble it yourself take pictures or notes step by step and watch were/how all the springs,buttons & o-rings go....CAUTION-remember to watch out for the spring in the cup-it has a lot of tension on it and can be @ 6- 7" long! plus it may help to heat around the cup bolts slightly to soften the locktight holding them in place (cause if they were assembled with the green locktight instead of the red you might pull the threads out with the bolts:eek:) + remember to line up all the arrows/notches when re assembling...good luck:beer;:D:beer;

Just remember that the primary clutch is balanced so make marks so it will go back together the same as it came apart. Alsoneed tool to hold in the sliders on the primary clutch .

Just had this sorta happen to me the outer sheave rotated throwing my clutch out of balance and I had to baby it back to the truck.
