clutch taper

MH. Do you mean smaller bearing (ID) in the cover, which would mean smaller fixed side shaft?

Could you elaborate?

geo, not dia. but in height. Or thickness. The picture should be self explanatory. I happen to have both on the bench this weekend. The 600 clutch is on the left. 800 on the right. Both clutches have a 32mm taper but the cover is different. I've heard the term "heavy duty" when people refer to the 800 cover.

Thanx 638. TRS enlightened me yesterday.
One more question if you may. Are the fixed half, spider sliding half the same? Meaning if you install a 800 cover all is good (except balance maybe). Is the shaft on the fixed half the same length on both?

Funny you should ask. I didn't take a physical measurement of the shaft but I did look a the numbers stamped in the castings. The fixed sheave number was identical. The sliding sheave the last 3 numbers were different. I'll take couple measurements tonight, and let you know, but I'm guessing they are the same. My thinking behind all this was to run the 600 clutch on my 800 while I sent the 800 clutch off to have some work done on it. Which should work just fine IMHO.

I tried to install the wider cover on my wife's 660 clutch last year and when installing the clutch bolt, it tried compressing the spring if I remember correctly. I didn't waste any time taking measurements and swapped it back.

So I verified dimensionally the clutches are identical except the cover. What diamonddave brings up is a good point. I don't have my 600 anymore so I can't verify the clutch bolt being different but it wouldn't surprise me at all. Or rather the bolt may be the same but the washer setup might be different. The 800 clutch bolt has two washers (a flat & a shoulder) and they recess into the cover slightly when installed.

If the flat washer on the bolt were larger diameter than the clutch shaft (600), which is what diamonddave is saying, then it wouldn't work with the 800 cover.

Thanks so much guys.

Sometimes I miss not working in a shop where you can sift through the parts bins or steal, I mean borrow, things off of machines lol.

Nah I don't, rather just ask on Snowest lol.

The clutch bolt and washers are the same on 800 and 600 according to the microfiche.

I'm running a titanium primary bolt on my 600 with a patrick custom carbon clutch cover, both of these pieces are made to work on a 800, and they work fine on the 600.

I'm getting the 600 clutch and sending it out to someone with a screwed up from new 911 cover to get the cover fixed and rebalanced.
Then it's going on my sled. The original looks in good shape but has 2000+ miles and coming from Cat lol I'm a little amazed but worried lol.
Then I'll rebuild and put the original on the shelf.
