Clutch rollers destroyed

I have an issue with my rollers. Current primaray clutch set-up with MCX 180 Nytro is 8BU weights with 4.5g rivets (90261-06033-00) in each hole, BWB spring, 14.5mm rollers. It appears as if the rivet heads are contacting the plastic spacer washers on one side of the roller. The washer almost looks melted and it has resulted in the roller getting jammed so that it will not turn. This has basically casused the roller bushing to become crushed and has wore a bit of a grove in the weight. All three rollers are screwed.

I have filed and sanded the weights a little bit to smooth them out and have also filed some of the rivet head away to add some clearance. The outer diameter of the washer is 16.8mm so I filed a bit off the side of the rivet head to insure the weight would contact the roller before the rivet head touched the plastic washer. I have installed new rollers and plastic spacer washers.

This is the second time this has happened and has cost me 2 days of sledding so I want to make sure I have this problem solved before heading out again. I ran it on the stand and everything looks good from a clearance perspective, but there is no load on the clutches and no heat causing things to expand etc.

I also have new weights and rivets on the way incase I have to change things out. Maybe I installed the rivets incorrectly the first time. There was obviously some clearance issues here.

Anyone else ever had a problem like this? Rollers and weights are getting expensive and I am loosing riding time.

It almost sounds like your missing the washer(s) that are on each side of the 8BU arms? I can't see any other way that the arm could come in contact with the washer on the sides of the rollers. I had the rivets plus a washer on my arms and never had the problem your describing....Sherm

A picture would be helpful but without seeing it and by the way you described it I think that the rivets were smashed down too much causing the end diameter to be too large.

Ken....

Ya, I know what you are saying. The washers on the side of the weights are in correctly. I ground down some of the rivet so hopefully that solves the problem.

Yes, that could have been the problem.

Is there any way that the sliding sheave that holds the weight arms and the spider can be out of alignment or not properly indexed? i wouldn't think so unless the sliders are really worn out and even then I don't know if this is possible??? This might result in the weights not being aligned properly with the rollers.

I was trying to find a part number for smaller diameter washers but I found that even the sleds that came stock with 14.5mm rollers (V-max) used the same larger diameter washers. I think I will take you suggestion and grind the washer down.
