Clutch Questions

OK so with the belt topic taking off. It was opened up another topic that i have some quesitons about.

I have never really worked or tuned clutched before and only having had my 900 for one season so far (which was full of repairs...ahh got to love the 900) anyways, I am looking for some tips and such on keeping the clutches in good working order.

I know about cleaning them with soap and water, but what else, do you need to remove both clutches to keep them tuned? If so anyone have an extra clutch puller you want to sell..lol

thanks

when your tunig your primary You will be changing weights and springs either one can be done with the clutch on the sled.the secondary must be remover to change spring but of course thats easy.

I clean my clutchs in the diswasher (Preseason ) and clean the sheaves with brake cleaner and a rag periodically as well as blowing the dust out with compressed air during the season

Not trying to start anything here, but you should not use any kind of solvent or petroleum based cleaner on your clutch sheaves. Should scrub them with a clean scotch brite pad and hot hot soapy water. You should also clean the sides of your new belt with a stiff bristle brush and hot soapy water to remove the mould release from them. This info is available on the SLP website, and was an article in Snow Tech magazine a couple of years ago.

Get the primary balanced. For a minimal balance go to 1200psi or Carl's Cycle. Cost about $35 plus shipping.

For a detailed balance where weights are shimmed and machine the clutch ... not just drill balance .... INDYDAN for around $120

Some replace the primary bolt each year cause the 96 ft lb torque stretches the bolt.

Clutch puller is $25-45 on ebay.

Go with the 1115 belt.

If you throw a belt at WOT you will tweek the crank and shorten engine life.

When you put the clutch back on (cold) heat soak the crank and then retorque to spec.

Good advice above..

also make sure you are changing your springs in BOTH clutches every year..they will sack out and lose performance..

like stated above..replace your primary clutch bolt every year as well..torque to 96ft lbs..and warm sled up a bunch of times..not just in one day, over time..and continue to re-torque the bolt to 96..it will be set good after 3x..and check every few rides just incase...

check your bushings in your weights..wiggle the weights back and forth with needle nose, your looking for a wobble...anything very noticable is bad, and need new bushings..

always make sure your belt deflection is good..and if you have not had your primary shimmed for whatever belt (3211115 is by far the best), make sure you get it done...

but by far the most imp..balance your primary...period..
