Clutch question

We have 2 2011 ktm's and it seems the clutches do not like the cold weather. Both bikes stall every time we shift into first or second gear. One bike took 20 minutes to warm up before it would shift and stay running. Is this common? What can we do??

Thanks!

My vote would be the lighter oil also. I run Rotella 15w and mine will not start if it is below freezing. So I ended up using the synthetic 5w and it has not been an issue. FYI I have a rekluse clutch.

Have you tried running Dumonde Tech LWHS Racing Transmission Oil. It's not cheep but only use the dumonde when riding in winter low freezing temps. Otherwise it's good old Shell Rotella.

What bike do you have? This happens on my 4 stroke yami. So the oil for the clutch is not separated from clutch. And mine is not the rekluse exp...it's the rekluse zstart pro.

The ktm guys say stick with motorex 10 60 but the bike simply will not go into gear until its really hot. Its only 35 degrees. What happens when its 10 out?!?

I spoke to the local Amsoil rep and he said they dont make an oil for KTM's. Im glad he was honest but it make me nervous to run any other oil than whats recommended. Are there any ktm guys out there running a different brand in the winter. Im willing to try whatever but i would have more confidence if someone else recommended what theyve had success with....

Thanks for the comments thus far

Ryan

I run Yami semi-syn 5W-40 in winter and Yami semi-syn 10W-50 in summer with no issues. I've got an '08 KTM 530 XCRW with a Z-start pro. I'm in WA with temps typically in the 20's and rarely below 10.

Ktm in Alaska

I run Honda's cold weather synthetic oil without moly (this is a must) in my Ktm 525 and have had good luck with it even in -20 deg weather. But i don't recommend riding at those temps, you won't have much fun.

kawasaki 450f

I am running a KX450F and the a Yamaha YZ450 we also ran the rotella in in a Suzuki 250 2 Stroke last year. We haven't had any problems with the motors.
