Clutch Bolt Torque
Have seen this on 3 or 4 new 12' 800 poo's this year already. We need to, as a precaution: Check and re-check your primary clutch bolt torque. Polaris says 80lbs. The guy who did my clutch says 70. I went to 75. I sent my clutch in to have it surfaced this year (im riding a 12' SB Assault 800 and at that point it had ZERO miles on it) When i went to pull it off, i took the clutch bolt out and screwed the puller in by hand and put a half of a turn on the puller with a crescent wrench (before gettting up to get a ratchet. The clutch just flat out fell off. No pop, no bang, no heating... JUST SHOULDNT HAPPEN LIKE THAT.
We went out ot the snowys and 3 of us had new zero mile polaris 800's and 2 of the three had the exact same thing happen to them. Both right around 250-300 mile mark. Belt squealing was the initial problem, adjusted deflection a little on the trail and it went away for a bit. 2 guys had to cut the day early and head back because they could tell the bushings were out just by grabbing the face of the clutch and wiggling it. Looks like the clutch came loose on the crank and was spinning the crank end wore through the inner bore of the clutch where it seats on the crank. There are a couple theorys going around about it, but to be on the safe side... Check your primary bolt torque after every ride for the first 2 or three rides and DEFINITELY before your first ride and after the first mile or so while varying the throttle and engaging the belt.
Alot of guys are suggesting loose jamnut/spider and I have been told that this is a part of the problem but that supposedly happened because the clutch got real hot from spinning on the crank and melted the loctite on the jamnut.
