Clutch broke in half???

I have a 2012 Assault with a little over 400 miles on it. While riding today i stopped and my clutch would not disengage and my sled would die. Got it back to the truck and thought my primary spring was broken but everything looked fine. Took off my belt and the clutch would engage and not disengage. Brought it to the shop and they said they have only seen that problem one time and it was a broken clutch shaft. They haven't pulled it apart yet but should know by the morning. Has anyone else had this problem where the clutch would not disengage or broke? Sled was pulling rpms fine even on the way to the truck just couldnt stop or it would die.

Have seen many with bad bushings on the movable sheave, but only one broken, and it was pretty obvious.

my buddy just replaced his primary on his edge, but the build date on the clutch was November 2011. Second ride his locked up and we can't move the sheave. Gotta be a bad bushing and now its seized. Does Polaris warranty replacement parts like clutches?

Once i lost an entire bushing out of a roller on my clutch and it started to not fully disengage when slowing and would also get locked wide open. Doing bushings on a polaris clutch is pretty minor as long as you have a press and all of the SLP tools needed

Last weekend a friend lost a keeper on the shaft bushing and it was sliding around on the shaft... the belt didn't last to long after that!
I' ll be rebuilding that clutch this evening!

Mine busted in half on my dragon and my buddies twisted the center of his into an oval on his assult so a new bushing wouldnt fix it. Two new primary clutches in a week. Neither were coverd on warranty

Snapped my primary last year on my pro. Ended taking out the crank and clutch. I have a thread on here about it. Sucked but it got warrantied.

Clutch Bolt Torque

Have seen this on 3 or 4 new 12' 800 poo's this year already. We need to, as a precaution: Check and re-check your primary clutch bolt torque. Polaris says 80lbs. The guy who did my clutch says 70. I went to 75. I sent my clutch in to have it surfaced this year (im riding a 12' SB Assault 800 and at that point it had ZERO miles on it) When i went to pull it off, i took the clutch bolt out and screwed the puller in by hand and put a half of a turn on the puller with a crescent wrench (before gettting up to get a ratchet. The clutch just flat out fell off. No pop, no bang, no heating... JUST SHOULDNT HAPPEN LIKE THAT.

We went out ot the snowys and 3 of us had new zero mile polaris 800's and 2 of the three had the exact same thing happen to them. Both right around 250-300 mile mark. Belt squealing was the initial problem, adjusted deflection a little on the trail and it went away for a bit. 2 guys had to cut the day early and head back because they could tell the bushings were out just by grabbing the face of the clutch and wiggling it. Looks like the clutch came loose on the crank and was spinning the crank end wore through the inner bore of the clutch where it seats on the crank. There are a couple theorys going around about it, but to be on the safe side... Check your primary bolt torque after every ride for the first 2 or three rides and DEFINITELY before your first ride and after the first mile or so while varying the throttle and engaging the belt.

Alot of guys are suggesting loose jamnut/spider and I have been told that this is a part of the problem but that supposedly happened because the clutch got real hot from spinning on the crank and melted the loctite on the jamnut.

all fixed. was a bad bushing, on a brand new clutch...

Got my sled back today from the dealer. My clutch did infact break in half. They pulled the clutch bolt and the front sheeve fell right off. They checked my run out and said it was perfect. Threw a new clutch on and I'm all set!

This is from my 2009 D8, happened yesterday.... any body seen this before? Anything else I need to check now?

My 2012 broke a shaft EXACTLY like that at 450 miles man! Polaris put a new clutch on, checked crank run out and away I went. Question is, how do you get the clutch off the machine now?? I let my dealer worry about that;)

I read a thread on here (can't find it) to prevent this from happening is to torque the primary bolt to 80 pounds before and after the first ride. When I got mine home I did torque it and the bolt didn't turn but after a 40 mile ride it did turn a little.

Was planning on pulling the electrical cover off and unplugging stuff, was going to add another ground wire from the chassis to the electrical plate while I'm in there.

I'll will retourque the primary bolt after the first ride.....

Thanks for the input fellas

Some primaries breaking in two is not a new thing. My 2011 pro broke this year at 1200 mi. Preseason I had it balanced and the spider torque checked too, incase this was the cause. The spider was tight.

my pro just broke in half also and they cannot get the other half off
im worried about all the out of balance on my crank that this caused
ive never had a polaris clutch problem , have not heard what polaris is doing from my dealer yet

i guess my last ride will be lost
