clutch alignment/belt deflection?...

Just swapped a motor on a 98 Max 600, the belt is so tight it actually pulls the sled along the ground at idle and squeals the belt. I know the belts are right... so Im thinking alignment. Anyone have any tips for making sure the motor is positioned correctly as is the clutch alignment and deflection?

1.Check your alignment and center to center distance with the proper tools.
If you dont have the c to c tool its right about 10.5" with a quick check on the tape measure.
2. Check your secondary and see if your belt is riding high. If so then you need to remove the washers from the three sheave spacing bolts located on the backside over your secondary. They come from the factory with two washers on each. If the washers have already been removed then you need to replace the bolts. They get the ends worn off over time and change the sheave spacing causing tight belt deflection and the dreaded Yami-creep.:face-icon-small-win

THANK YOU so much for the reply and info! Actually, the belt is flush with the top of the secondary, sometimes even just below the top. And should there be LARGE washers on the shaft BEHIND the secondary between the secondary and bearing to reduce the secondary slideing back-and-forth along the shaft?

Yes they normally have two washers on the shaft behind the secondary from the factory. You can remove them if necessary. Also check your buttons that the helix slides against on the secondary and see if they are getting worn out.

With your guys's help, will get to look at this the next few days. Will post what I find. Thanks for the input!

Make sure you check the three bolts on the back of the secondary from time to time. I waited too long and they got pounded out on the ends. When I turned them out they turned hard and damaged the threads. Luckily there was enough left to reuse the clutch.
