Closures around McCall!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wouldn't worry to much it only looks like they took 6000 acres. When it comes to habitat and riders that is not much at all. Sounds to me like someone may have actually thought this one out!

Of course if its 6000 in the best spots around then that would suck. But it still says you have over a million left.

To be honest I but the tree hugging skiers are more pissed than you as it looks like they only got a little bit of what they asked for!

It appears that a good portion of the "Cat-skiing" areas on the west and east sides of Goose Lake have been included in the "closed" areas. These are the Granite and Slab Butte areas that are mentioned. The open hillsides on the west side of Goose Lake are going to be off limits for over-the-snow vehicles. Of course, the snowcats for the "Cat-skiing" will be allowed to traverse the area because of the existing special use permit. It does look like we can still get to Granite Lookout but not south or west of the lookout. The maps on line show it fairly well. The Forest Service office in McCall claims they will have larger personal maps available for distribution the first of next week. Waiting to get my hands on one.
There will be an appeal time frame. I wonder if the skiers will appeal it before the snowmobilers do. It sure could have been worse, but of course it could have been better. For every acre that was closed for motorized use, 100 acres should have been opened. That way, the proposed wilderness areas, that have been proposed for years with no decision in the foreseeable future, would have been opened for motorized used. Those areas have all been burned and could be made available for recreation. I don't think you will find any skiers over there.
Just my 2 cents worth.
Everyone should join the state snowmobile association and any other organizations that will help fight these closures.

Could have been worse

The FS supervisor was kind enough to invite the McCall Club officers in for an explanation of the signed document before it went on line. We appreciate this and an opportunity to express our thoughts and feelings about what they decided.

It could have been worse, and a lot so but they took into consideration our needs, our input and wishes, and tried to keep everyone happy. Not a good position to be in. We could have lost another 500,000 acres but that was put off until we all find out the results and conclusions of the ongoing Wolverine Study. That one could put us in court as soon as it is released.

Remember the areas on Granite Mtn and the west side of Slab Butte are closed only from January 15th until March 30, and then open to us.

I don't like giving up any land too and it seems like we never get any back and it has to stop somewhere and I think that time will be when the Wolverine Study restrictions come out in a couple of years.

We did plea to be able to start grooming more on the west side of New Meadows and that was not turned down. Will take time to get it studied and approved though.

It will only antagonize the situation to cross over into the restricted areas so please join us in staying out of them until they are opened up as noted above.

PS, we were up beside Goose Lake on Wednesday putting up some posts for some better direction signs and there was 6 inches of snow on the road. Too early to get off the road but enough to go.

You have to wonder how many peeps were unwittingly lead to their own demise by trying to be nice guys-not knowing what the FS was doing. The FS is not our friend.

That study was being performed by university students in Montana or Wyoming. I can't remember where. I talked to them quite a bit and even took some of those beacons with me when I was trail riding, knowing full well where the wolverines were and why they were trying to keep track of where we had conflicts with the wolverine. I even had my wife carry my beacon with her while I went off the trail. Really, we all should know better when dealing with any "study" of any kind where leaf lickers are concerned. They only try to hoard all the land for themselves and to hell with everyone else. I just wish there was a way to please everyone with out all the signs that say "your out and we're in, so piss off!" It really is irritating.

i rode that area for the last 4 years, and i have only run into skiers a handfull of times, and when we do run into them, they are usually pretty deep in the hills, this is a ridiculous decision!

I don't think we need to use the approach "It could have been worse" Any land being shut-down is a bad thing. I don't think motorized users are victorious unless we get back the hundreds of thousands of acres we have lost in recent years.

True but how the heck are we going to do that unless we assert are authority. They have deep pockets and the government on their side.

Buy assert I mean dont take no for an answer.

Good points but,,,,

Wish us luck in winning any back. Now is the time to challenge these rulings if you disagree with the decisions, but it takes funding. The "greenies" are better organized than we are...... do you all belong to the Blue Ribbon Coalition or a legal fund? An individual can have some effect, but not as much as a group. A group can have a much larger impact than the sum of the individuals on the deciders of these issues.

Join one of the organizations and contribute to their legal funds. Lawyers are what the greenies use, so we need to fight fire with fire. (I am not a lawyer, but a lifetime member of BRC).

JMHO.

I have made at least two trips a season to McCall for the last several years. I do not think I will come this winter, the closure is in an area i liked to ride. Even if I am reading the boundaries wrong, the last thing McCall needs is another closed area to worry about. This is a bad thing for everyone. :face-icon-small-sad

Closures

I understand that they will not be enforcing the closures areas this winter and it will most likey be challenged in court anyway and that will put it on hold till some Judge decides. So could be years before we know for sure what is happening.

If you stay away, it is just your loss. I ride out from my garage. (grin)
