Closeable hood screens... Whats the point

I just got an 01 mxzx 440 and it has closeable vents and i was just wondering whats the point? I put a light under the hood so you can see it better. The right side is shut.

It's so you can open them and let more air in under the hood...... I leave mine open all the time on my 01 Summit

i get that open is more air, most have only open vents/screens. Whats the point of closing them? Keep your pipe hot on a cold day? being that its only a 440 that seems like it would make sense in my mind but im just guessing

those were on most of the Doo's of that era, I believe it was to allow you to close them on very cold days to keep out fine snow and reduce the chance of freezing carb issues. That's my guess.

They help with the fine, dry powder and when your cuttin the deep snow, close em up on the powdery days, it'l keep the engine bay dry of snow and your carbs won't freeze up. I taped off 1/2 the vents on my 99 670, cuz earliar in the year when it was really really cold with that dry deep powder I froze up my carbs cuz there was a little moister in them and the snow got under the hood and sat on top the carbs, thus freezing them...
