Close call on -05 piston

Picked up an -05 RMK 900 in good condition before christmas. Didn't know much about them, more than that they do have a bad reputation.
Started reading up on them and soon found this eminent forum! Loads of great info that have helped me get to know this machine intimately in a short time.

Anyway, what really got me worried was all the reports on -05 pistons dropping skirts and annihilating the rest of the engine in the process...

Rode it for 125 miles before my concience told me to stop and check them pistons out. Took a peak through the exhaust ports and everything looked fine. The narrow ringland also confirmed that it had the stock -05 pistons in it.

Decided to park it and order new -06 pistons, just in case.


Tore it down while waiting for the parts and found this:

Piston skirt on PTO side cracked all the way through and just waiting to fall off
No other damage at all


Thanks to this forum I was able to catch this disaster just in time and with this post I would like to thank you all so very much for that!

My piston looks almost identical haha, caught it in the nick of time, so lucky!
