Cleaning ice out of running boards

Do they make something that works without tearing up the tunnel. I have a buddy that uses a small garden shovel and I have been using my shovel handle, there has to be something better out there.

Its hard to believe that those would work without needing to be scraped. My buddy has a 08 XP and his do the same, though not as bad.

Plastic garden shovel. Also my friend go a small platic balpeen style hammer that has shot (bb's) inthe head. It works great.

3" stiff bladed putty knife for boards & inside tunnel, always worked good for me on ice buildup removal.

3 dollar small window scraper. btw, i have better boards, and yes they do build up snow over time. better than stock, but not without snow. scraper works like a champ. get them at any gas station.

I use a small plastic mallet form snapon...works awesome on the boards, suspension, and tunnel..just light taps...

Try using a small rubber mallet. A friend has an M sled and he carries one with him. It doesn't scratch or dent the running boards. One or two whacks and the ice is gone.

Here's a little secret...

Why do you need a tool?

I simply kick off the snow and ice anytime I come to a stop or when I prepare to go for a run, takes all of 5 seconds and since you are always doing it, it never has a chance to build up. After a while, you will do it without even thinking about it and then before you know it, you will always have clean boards:cool:

Do these better boards prevent snow from getting into the toe holds? That is the only place I have trouble with my snow buildup...(05 REV)

I have a long klein screw driver(for taking the air box out.) and just pry and poke the snow out. I use the rubber handle to knock the snow off of the tunnel .

I'll second the scraper

I carry the small handled ice scraper and don't ride without it. It fits in the outside pocket of my pack, is easy to get to, and usually gets passed around when we stop.

There are enlarged holes in the footwells to let the snow fall thru, however, i have found in really deep snow it can still build up if you don't kick it out every now and then.

As has been stated, I just kick the snow and ice off (or thru the boards) every time I stop or when I am going straight and just stomp the snow and ice. Don't give it a chance to really build up and it's no problem.

The only time I have ever had a problem with snow or ice build up was when the snow was over 2' of soft fresh snow. No way to get rid of the snow. Your running boards were well below the level of the snow. The only thing you can do then is kick the ice build up off and let the snow simply flow around.

The snow eliminators work where you step on the board to push it through but the snobunje shovel is what you are looking for to dig it out of the other spots. It's plastic and won't scratch up your boards or tunnel. It does exactly what you asked for.

Around here the stuff builds and freezes fast, really hard to keep it kicked off (07 xrs, it was not too big an issue on the old RX-1 though.) I got the snobungee trowel, for $10.00, lost it, then saw the same deal in Sears (garden dept.) minus the clip and fire starter for less than $2.00. Works pretty good, they can break if you go at it too hard.
