Chromoly weld opinion please...

Recently purchased a sled that has a one piece custom bar and post setup that is about 3" too short for me. I'm looking for the cheapest and easiest way to get through the season and will deal with a better solution next summer so I'm looking for an opinion as too whether this will be strong enough. I found some 1 1/8" OD x 1/8" wall 4130 tubing to over sleeve the existing 7/8" OD post at the approx. 6" straight section in the pics (approx. where the throttle cable disconnect is first pic). There would be about 2 1/2" of overlap top and bottom and 3" air space inside. Was also thinking of adding a piece of 4130 rod internally as well as (or instead of?) the over sleeve. What do you think welders, am I going to be standing there connected to my sled by wires at some point?

Thanks! :fish2:

I have done a emergency repair like that and worked fine. I would and did put a piece of soild metal about the same size as the sleeve inside the post.
Put some alignment marks on the post before you cut it to keep it straight.

what i would do is put a inside piece whole length of the post.

then take the same od as the pipe now 45 both ends and both ends of the bar you cut. weld everything up nice grind it flush grind it with a dewalt 120 grit grinder and youll never see that you extended it paint it and ride

That's what I wanted to hear, thanks guys. I would rather just do the round stock inside but feared it might not be stiff enough, 45ing it seems like a good plan though, no sheer point. I'm not 100% sure yet what the ID is on the stem and can't check it of course until I cut it but it's probably the same as the bars. Will follow up on completion. Looks like there is plenty of excess cable so nothing needs to be extended (otherwise I'd likely just sell it...)

Anyone know where to get chromoly in Portland, preferably NE. There are a bunch of steel yards on Columbia but nobody lists it on their website?

Cut the handle bar part to a few inches on each side of the post make it a T-Top post get some pivot risers and get some bars of choice.

ps700, great thought! A few more $$ but avoids the whole welding issue. Outside diameter is 7/8", will have to check what standard pivot adapters are.
Thanks!

Not sure what brand I have, but the 4" pivot riser I ran last season was for 7/8" tube on both ends. That is a pretty damn good idea.
