In my 1971 chevy 4x4 I noticed a leak under the transfer case. Thought I would go ahead and replace the fluid but was going to take a plate off the side that was above the fill plug first because it looked as if it were leaking around the seal. Transfer case is a NP 205 and when I pulled the first bolt it started spewing oil out. This wasn't right so I pulled the drain plug and drained out almost a gallon of what looks like oil and tranny fluid. Oh Oh, so my question is - is there a seal between where the transfer case imput shaft to the tranny is and could it be letting tranny fluid thru. It makes sense as I was a couple quarts low on tranny fluid a couple months ago.

Is it hard to replace or expensive aside from droping the transfer case out? I can do the work myself so labor isn't involved in cost.

yes, there is 2 seals between the trans and t-case...one faces forward and one backwards to seal them from each other..is an easy fix..just pull the t-case and replace the 2 seals..a little silicone on the shaft splines is also a good idea(shaft adapter between the trans output and the tcase input) also refill the trans..it is low on fluid now...
 
Thanks, that is what I figured. Good to hear it is an easy fix although that t-case isn't light to be taking in and out very often. Do I need to drain the fluids in t-case and tranny before separating?

no but it will leak a little..leave the tranny in and just pull the t-case...unbolt the t-case adapter right at the back of the tranny..what I do is pull the adapter bolts,drivelines,speedo cable, and shift linkage, then put a floorjack or tranny jack under the t-case crossmember (if someone has removed the upper frame mnts from the crossmember otherwise you will need to leave 2 bolts in the tranny and raise the trans/t-case up and pull the crossmember first) then slide the whole thing back 2-3 inches and lower..then pull the adapter off the t-case and replace the seals (1 from each end) put silicone on the shaft splines and reassemble... you will have to pull the frame t-case mnt if it still has it...from both the t-case and the frame rail...I am a small guy and when I was younger I used to just slide under and benchpress the case in and out..they weigh about 130 pds...now days I use a floor jack (with the saddle removed)with a pin welded to a steel plate and just clamp or bolt the case or crossmember to it...

my 70' 3/4 t did the samething also fyi be careful of the newer chev's 01-07 they will pump the transfer case oil into the trans and run you transfercase dry, the seal inbtween gets weak and the tansfer case has a oil pump hooked to the shaft,

hey hilinerider, I have found that most of the time it is actually the t-case case halves leaking...mine is doing it on my truck right now..they leak all the oil out and then burn em up...but either way on newer gm's is a great idea to check the fluid level on a regular basis..dont just assume the lube shop did....
