Getting ready to replace my Tekvest. After several years of use it has developed a certain funk. And has taken it's fair share of impacts.

So I was wondering what everybody is wearing for upper body protection.

www.tekvest.com is my go to choice...whats yours?

If I am not mistaken the Klim vest is a Tekvest brand Chest protector. A freestyle I think

Yep, you are correct.. I have tried sixsixone, Scott, EVS jersey & a couple other. The Klim (tekvest) is by far the most comfortable & it doesn't hinder your movement.

I wore the Klim Tekvest for the past 6 years but switched to the Thor Impact Rig Armored shirt this season. Definitely is a lot less bulkier than the Tekvest and offers extended shoulder, elbow and forearm protection. Not quite as much protection up front or on the sides as the Tekvest but still protects the vitals. Been really happy with it so far and feel like I have better movement when riding.

Liking the Klim vest, good range of movement, like the warmth for my core and it spreads out the weight of my heavy pack.

I throw it in the washer every once in a while with tide febreeze sport to get the stank out.

My tek vest has been great. I will buy another one if this one ever wears out:D

I decided to try the Sixsixone Core Saver this year. I wear it under my jacket and I dont even notice its there, and it keeps me pretty warm. Its kinda like a chest protector, kidney belt, spine protection, and shoulder pads all rolled into one. It saved me a few times when I had close encounters with the handlebars!

Vests are a good idea. Avoids this kind of stuff:

Mine is 12 years old. Shoulder pad velcro is about done....but the rest is fine.
It's just about like this one. More protecton than the Freestyle or whatever. It's the race legal version.

but I don't have this dumb diamond plating on mine

I would consider wearing something like this...would it be best as a mid-layer?
Is there an insulated model or are they mesh?
Mine offers a layer of warmth. Not sure the body armor stuff offers as much warmth as the vest. Would have to dress different if I went with body armor shirt.

I didn't have any issues staying warm in the Thor body armour you posted above. On the super cold days I would wear two layers of under armour, the vest, beacon over the top and then my jacket and always stayed plenty warm. Lately I've just been able to wear an under armour t-shirt, the vest and jacket and be fine.

The Tekvest definitely does insulate but the issue with the one I had is that it would not let any heat out causing me to sweat and allowing my mid section to get wet by the end of the day which was no good. With the Thor set up it is very well vented and I have not had any issues with sweating heavily because most the heat is released through the mesh venting. Just my .02 both are a good product IMO just comes down to personal preference.

I think I like the traditional style of chest protection over a body/compression suit. Especially when spring time rolls around and I go to a light weight shell with the tekvest on the outside.

That is another question. Do you wear your protection on the inside or outside of your jacket? During most of the winter I wear it on the inside of my HMK gear...but move it to the outside later in the season.

I see some guys wear it outside the jacket all season long. They claim it breaths better?

Good Points...

I too have seen guys wear them on the outside of the jacket, same with some people even wearing there beacon on the outside. Personally, I think these are two terrible ideas. A. Your beacon should not be anywhere that you could snag it or get it torn off your body in an accident or slide. and B. Back on topic, these jackets are meant to breath and take body moisture out away from you keeping you dry. Having something like a tekvest or any sort of coverage over these fabrics greatly inhibits them from working correctly. Most vests are not breathable fabric, or plastic molded protection. So now your 500 dollar jacket is wicking moisture from your body through the coat and thats as far as it goes, the moisture stays there on the body. Keep your vest inside the coat, IMHO.

I am going to have to try it out.

I know guys that wear a WARY avy vest and don't complain about it effecting their jackets performance. But it would make sense that it is blocking some of the fabrics breathability?

I too wear an avi-vest, but I take the chest protection out, so that it is just the nylon fabric. nylon is highly breathable, and not very waterproof in its natural state. I 100% notice that I am way sweatier though when I wear that, vs. just my coat. I just think that the molded abs and plastic pieces in a vest definitely do not breath at all, and could see that holding the moisture in more than nylon.

Klim Tekvest for me. That combo'd with their new Revolt pullover is the perfect combination for all days except the dumping days.

Under Armor or Klim Aggressor base, Tek Vest, then Revolt will take you all the way down to teen temps. On the warm days just swap out the thermal base for a breathable jersey or Under armor t shirt top.

Oh did I mention I LOVE the improvements to the new Pullover?

Exactly how I do it.

Jacket shell on outside in winter. Beacon on outside of Tek Vest. Then mid layers and base layers.

In spring...rarely a shell. Might have something LIGHT if need be. When the sun comes out...it's TekVest on the outside. Same mid and base layers as in winter.

When it's sunburn weather April and later in that 55°+ bluebird day, I go with t-shirt and vest..beacon, as always, still on the outside of the vest. Generally just have a fleece liner with if need be.

So your saying that you wear the Revolt as a jacket? It is windproof, but has zero waterproofing, don't you get soaking wet?? The new revolt is pretty bad *** though!

As long as it isn't snowing......YES! Even on powder days I stay dry. I do keep my stow away jacket in my pack though for when it gets wet and gore-tex is needed.

I have had their coats and the powerxross pullover. Since the stow away and revolt they never leave my bag anymore. I find minimal and layers work best in Utah's backcountry.

klim tek vest has saved my ribs so many xs i stopped counting..and i dont even know im wearing it 99% of the time..ill be using it till im old and grey and in my 80's
